Bishop Francis J McKiernan
Tom Fitzpatrick was born on Saint Valentine's Day 1918 in Scotshouse County Monaghan.Qualified as a Solicitor in 1939 and built up an extensive practice in the Cavan area.Member of Cavan CYMS from 1940.Founded Cavan Branch Fine Gael with his lifelong friend Andy O Brien and Sean Magee in 1950.Soon afterwards Tom was elected to Cavan UDC.Senator from 1961-1965, when he was elected to Dáil Eireann.Served in Government as Minister For Lands,Forestry and Tourism,Transport and Power and finally Céann Comhairle 1982-1987.Retired from politics in 1989.Founder member and Chairman with his wife Betty of Cavan Drama Festival in 1945.Betty died in 1951.In 1973 Tom married Carmel (McDonald).He is pictured here attending the launch of the CYMS website on the 16th of February 2006.Immense contribution to the promotion and development of Cavan town. Tom died n the 2nd October 2006 and is survived by his wife Carmel,daughter Geraldine (Madigan) and son Tom.His second daughter Fidelma (Dwyer) died on the 23rd June 1989.
Kevin M McDermott was born in Saint Phelim's Hospital Cavan in 1936.One of seven children ,he was reared in Owen Roe Terrace and edudcated at Drumcrave National School,the De La Salle Boys School and Cavan Technical School He was a member of the Boy Scouts under John Donohoe and also served in the FCA under Jim Scanlon.Played accordion and drums with many of the local prominent Ceili and Dance Bands including 'Des Jenkins'.Worked for a period of time in the Mineral Waters before emigrating to England in 1955 and the following year the rest of the Family followed and vacated the house at Owen Roe.On arrival in England,Kevin joined the Royal Air Force,where he served three years as an anti aircraft gunner in Germany and Cyprus.Later served with London Fire Brigade for a period of twenty five years.Returned with his wife and family to live in Wexford in 1990.'The Time of The Corncrake' is his first book.He is a frequent contributor of poems and articles to periodicals both at home and abroad. Son of Frank and Susan O Reilly,Brian was born on the 16th of september 1953 at 85 Church Street.Educated at The Poor Clares,De La Salle and Saint Patrick's College.Worked first as a Wardsman in Saint Phelim's Hospita before joining Gaffney and Cullivan where he qualified as an Architectural Technician.After a number of years apprenticeship, Brian opened his own very successful practice specialising in the Residential area .Excelled as an Impressario,promoting all the big name showbiz acts including Daniel O Donnell whom he first introduced to Cavan audiences.Established the very popular and successful first commercial local radio station CCR with his good friend Brian Finlay.Designed the new Cavan CYMS premises in Farnham Street including in his plans two retail units on the ground floor thereby ensuring the future financial welfare of the Club.His tragic and untimely death occured at the age of 51 on 20th April 2002 and he is buried in Killygarry cemetery.
Born on the 3rd February 1926 son of Joseph and Ellen (Nee McTague)McKiernan at Stradinan Drumreilly Lower.Educated at the local National School, Saint Patrick's College Cavan and Maynooth .Ordained to the Priesthood on the 17th of June 1951.Taught in Saint Malachy's College Belfast in 1951 before returning to Saint Patrick's Cavan in 1952.Founded Saint Felim's College Ballinamore in 1962.He was consecrated Bishop of Kilmore on the 10th of December 1972.Founder member of Cumann Seanchais Breffni,he has contributed numerous articles to both national and local publications.Head of the Organising Committee for the Visit of Pope John Paul 2 (September 29th to October 1st 1979).Over 3 million people joyfully celebrated the Holy Father among us.Education Spokesperson on Bishop's Conference.Consistent,loyal and enthusiastic friend of Cavan CYMS.Clerical profiles on this website are taken from his book 'The Diocese of Kilmore Bishops and Priests'.Died suddenly on the 23/12/2005- buried in the crypt of the Cathedral. Son of John F and Kathleen O Hanlon 3 Farnham Street,Edward was born there on the 1st of May 1920.Educated at Drumcrave NS,Saint Patrick College Clongowes Wood and UCD.Commisioned officer with the 12th Infantry Battalion (1940-1946).Apointed Editor of The Anglo Celt on the death of his beloved uncle Eddie in 1947.Married to Airmid (McMullin ), they had a Family of 4 boys and 1girl.Gifted photographer, he harnessed such diverse talent as Jim Logue,Tom Hussey,Paddy Ronaghan,Colm Connaughton and Brian Mulligan to highlight the local news in pictures .Member of Cavan Pavilion Tennis Club,Drama Festival,Owen Roe Committee and County Cavan Golf Club.He was a very talented rugby and badminton player (forming an unbeatable patrnership with his brother Willie).Handed over the 'reins' of Editor to his son Johnny in 1989.Outstanding promoter of Cavan CYMS.Weekly exposure of the Club's events in the Cavan News Items and generous pictorial coverage was a major boost.His untimely death occured on the 27th of November 1999 Second eldest son of Joe and Mary Culivan, born at 25 College Street in 1936.Phil was educated at the Poor Clare's,De La Salle,Saint Patrick's College and UCD where he obtained his BArch in 1957.Worked first with Cavan County Council.Formed Gaffney and Cullivan in 1960 with his friend and mentor Paddy Gaffney Town Engineer,specialising in outstanding and innovative Church and School design.Prominent second row rugby player with UCD and Cavan.Long time Secretary,Captain and Trustee of County Cavan Golf Club,author of its Centenary book 'A Century of Golf' 1994.Member of Committee of Cavan Drama Festival for over forty years-edited and published its Golden Jubilee book in 1995.Founder member and accomplished baritone with the Cavan Singers.Cherished and much sought Exhibitor at all the Local Art Events.Married to Dolle with a Family of three David,Rachel and Judith.His death occured on the 11th of June 1995 at the age of 61 at his residence 'Camelot' and he is buried nearby in Cullies Cemetery
Son of Jim and Kate Malone Gaelic Bar Rossa Place,Eamonn was born on the 19th of November 1940.A pupil of the Poor Clare Convent,De La Salle Brothers and Saint Patrick's College.An outstandingly successful business man and farmer.He is married to Bernie (Healy) with a family of 3 (Orla,Edmund and Mary)and resides at 'Toneymore House' Kilmore.The Chairman and dynamic behind Cavan/Monaghan Kidney Association.He is also a Committee member of the National Body.Winner of four medals at European Transplant Games in Slovenia 2004.Recently participated in the World games in Ontario and finished a close 4th in the 5 km walk in a time of 34 minutes.Both of his brothers JP and Oliver (Former Chairman) are lifetime members of the CYMS.
Member of the well known Smyth's of the Courthouse where she was born in 1918.Her Father was Joe Smyth Caretaker and Returniing Officer for the Cavan area and her Mother Mary Ann McGurk (sister of the famous Mick McGurk) from Colege Street.Josie was the youngest of twelve children.Educated at Saint Clare's NS and Cavan Vocational School.Worked in nearly all of the Departments in Cavan County Council before being appointed the Council's first Telephonist..Deeply religious and charitable ,she was a friend and patron of the famous Christy Browne (My Left Foot) and promoted his work long before it was fashionable.Lifetime member of Saint Joseph's Young Priests Society.On her retirement she went to live with her sister Eileen at 1 Earlsvale Place where she died on the 18th of December 1990 at the age of 72.She is buried in the Family plot in Cullies.Josie and the Smyth Family held the Club in such high esteem that in her will a substantial bequest was made by her to the Cavan CYMS Building Fund. Tom Sullivan is a native of Moynalty County Meath.He attended Saint Mary's National School Moynalty and the Christian Brothers School in Kells.Obtained a Diploma in Librarianship in UCD and is currently working on his dissertation for a Masters in Social Science in Queen's University Belfast.Tom worked in the Library Council Dublin from 1975 to 1982.Member of the Staff of Cavan County Library since 1982.Won a Junior League medal with Moynalty in 1975 and a Junior Championship medal in 1987.Long time member of County Cavan Golf Club, won the President's Prize (Seamus Fox's) in 1991.Editor of the acclaimed 'Drumkilly,From Ardkill Mountain to Kilderry Hill'.Married to Mary (Prendergast) from Dunmore County Galway.They have a Family of two children Ruth and Arthur.Our thanks also to Brian Connolly Jonathan Smith Geraldine Flanagan Marie Smith and most particularly Bernadette Swords of the Library Staff for their valued help and encouragement.
A native of the Barrack Hill Cavan where he was born in 1899 .Along with his brother Jack, joined the British Army at the outbreak of World War 1.Saw action in some of the bloodiest battles including the Battle of Mons.Returned to his native Cavan in 1919 and later married Molly (Meehan) and they had two boys (Tommy and Bobby) and two girls(Theresa and Margaret).Joined the Irish Army for the duration of the Emergency (1939-1946).A Postman by profession he was very well regarded throughout the area.With the advancing years the membership of the British Legion was dwindling and by 1961 it was agreed to share their premises with the recently displaced Cavan CYMS.Barney Connolly, Captain Michael McDonald and Steve Mulligan prominently supported Bobby in this arrangement.We acknnowledge with gratitude the generousity and goodwill extended to us in the early years in the Hut.
Over 400 boys and young men from Cavan town joined the British Army to fight in World War 1. Son of Phil (Barber) and Ellen Lee 7 Ashe Street.Elder brother of the late David.Educated at the Poor Clare Convent,De La Salle School,Saint Patrick's College Cavan,Maynooth and UCD.Joined the teaching staff of his old Alma Mater in September 1967 and taught English, Art,Latin and PE.Assisted in the training of the many successful College teams of the era including the Hogan Cup winners of 1972.In 2004 he was appointed the first lay President of Saint Patrick's College.Served the fledgling Community Games movement both at Local and National level.Scoutmaster,Parish Council Representative,Reader,Eucharistic Minister and Commentator in the Cathedral during The Holy Week Cermonies.Outstanding Religious Affairs contributor to Northern Sound Radio.Long time Director of Cavan Credit Union.Patsy is the Editor of the 'Cathedral Golden Jubilee Book 1992' .Cavan CYMS are indebted to him for permission to reproduce photographs and information from this fine publication on their website.

Son of Andy and Annie McEntee,Andy was born on the 4th of September 1911 in the 'Breffni Bar' 78 Main Street Cavan (Sean Reilly's MRCVSI).Educated at Drumcrave NS and Saint Patrick's College,Andy joined his father in the Anglo Celt in 1923 as a Junior Repoter.Married Judy (Cusack) in Upper Lavey Church in November 1951 and they had a Family of four boys (John,Aindreas,Myles and Desmond) and three girls (Anne,Grainne and Joan).Outside the home Andy's passion was 'Fly Fishing' and his tales of exploits by his colleagues of like taste were always hilarious.Life time member of County Cavan Golf Club.Chief Reporter with the Anglo Celt where he spent sixty years of his life and forged a close rapport with his friend and Editor Edward O Hanlon.After a brief retirement during which he compiled and published his book 'Memories Of The Lifetime in Journalism' .Andy died at his residence 61 Church Street on the 12th of December 1997.He is buried in Saint Brigids Cemetery Killygarry. Born in Trim but brought up in Termofeckin County Louth where his Father George Hussey was Editor of the Dundalk Argus.Spent a number of years in the Merchant Navy where he roamed the earth and saw for himself the depth and the breath of faraway places.In 1971 he was appointed Staff Photographer with the Anglo Celt where he succeeded Jim (Flash) Logue.Under a free license from his mentor and Editor Edward O Hanlon, his talent blossomed and he captured on film the essential essence of life in Cavan and the Drumlin counties during the 1970s and 80s.Encouraged by his good friend:the author Dermot Healy, he held a number of exhibitions in both Cavan and Sligo.Retired due to ill health in 1995 but continued to have a 'childlike' interest and wonder at the rapid developments in Communications and most particularly digital imaging.Much of the photographs of the 1970-1995 era featured on the CYMS web site are the work of Tom Hussey.His sudden and untimely death occured on the 25th of January 2005. A native of Ballinamore County Leitrim where he was born in 1935.Ordained to the Priesthood on the 18th of June 1961.Served as both teacher and President in Saint Patrick's College for 25 years. PP Mullagh until his sudden and untimely death on the 16th of July 1999..Prolific Historian writes in a very easy laid back style making the subject interesting and attractive.Major contributor of articles on the history of 'The O Rourkes of Breffni' and the history of Leitrim to the local historical journal 'Breifne'.Co author with Father Terence Cunningham DCL of 'Saint Patricks College-A Centenary History'.Author of' Cavan Football Story'(1974) and 'Sliabh an Eireann Slopes-A History of the Town and Parish of Ballinamore.'(1991).Prominent member of Cavan County Board GAA.He served on the Ulster Council both as a delegate and President.We are indebted to him for refernces to the foundation of the CYMS in the Diocese contained in his book 'The Diocese of Kilmore 1800-1950'.He is buried in his beloved Ballinamore. Son of Joe and Veronica Dunne Butlersbridge.Educated at Coolboyogue and Saint Patricks College Cavan.Served his time to the Insurance business in Dublin before joining his Father's Joe Dunne Insurance Brokerage and Building Society in Connoly Street Cavan (Muldoon Meats).Took the brave decision to relocate to 6 Main Street in 1994 and despite increased competition has grown the business steadily each year.His interests include local history,business and current affairs.Among his publications are 'P J Dunne's Postcard Collection' and'Farnham School and Its Community 1801-1996'which he co edited with his good friend Eugene Reilly NT.We are indebted to PJ for permission to display photographs and postcard views on this website originally sourced by him.He is married to Rena (McCarthy) from Dublin and they have two daughters Orla aged 20 and Amy who is 13. Son of Bill and Beezie (Nee.Igoe) O Hanlon.Born in St. Phelim's Place on the 21st November 1947.Educted at Crubany National School and Saint Patrick's College before taking up an appointment as Draughtsman with Cavan County Council in 1966.Best known for his active association with Cavan Boy Scouts where he was Scout Leader,Venturer Leader,Unit Leader,Chairman of the Regional Council and Assistant Regional Commissioner.Backstage worker at manyof the Scout's Pantomimes.Ever present member of Cavan Song Contest-always willing to voluntary contribute his services for the benefit of the Community. Outstanding member of Cavan Fire Brigade for the period 1969-2000.Editor of 'Out of the Ashes' .Major contibutor to Sarah Cullen's 'Golden Jubilee of the Boy Scouts'.We are indebted to Danny for permission to include some of his material from both Publications.Danny resides at Kilnavara with his wife Mary (Smith) and Grandson Adam.They have three boys (Fergal,Daniel and Finian) and two girls( Fiona and Ciara). Barry Owen Somerset Maxwell 12th Baron Farnham was born on the 7th of July 1931.Educated at Eton and Harvard University .Tall (6' 4") and handsome,he married Diana Gunnis in 1959-she was later to be Chief Lady in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth.Two daughters Harriett and Sophie.His first contact with the CYMS came through Father PJ Gargan who was an old fishing friend.On request, he opened negotiations with The British Ex Servicemen for use of the Hut by the recently displaced Cavan CYMS in 1961.He took a great interest in the welfare of the Club and was very amenable and cooperative in the later purchase of the Premises in 1976.Merchant Banker and Chairman of 'Brown Shipley'.He held several directorships including Chairman of 'Avon Rubber','Provident Life' and 'General Accident'.He was deservedly popular with staff and tenants and worked diligently in their interest.His untimely death occured at the age of 69 on the 22nd of March 2001 and he is buried in Kilmore Graveyard.
Son of Michael and Elizabeth Reilly Ashe Street.Eductated at the De La Salle School,Saint Patricks College and Saint Patricks Training College Drumcondra.One of a family of 5 boys, all of whom gave sterling service to Cavan Gaels.Eugene had a distinguished playing career culmimnatiing in the three Senior Championship successses of 1975 and 1977-1978. Along with his brothers J J,Paddy and Haulie have devoted themselves to the development of Under Age football in the town.Their success has resulted in the Gaels' almost total domination of this sector for the last 15 years.The present Senior team is almost totally home grown.Eugene is a senior member of the teaching staff at Farnham National School and is co author with P J Dunne of 'Farnham School and Its Community 1801-1996'.Cavan CYMS are indebted to them for permission to display photographs from their book.Eugene is married to Clare Browne and both their sons Eamonn and Dominic are outstanding members of Cavan Gaels 3 in a row Senior Championship team.
