Most Reverend Doctor Patrick Lyons Father Wiliam James Sheridan Father John Malachy Byrne Monsignor Patrick J McManus
Son of Thomas and Mary Teevan Main Street Killeshandra.He was educated at the local National School, Saint Patrick's College and Maynooth where he was ordained to the Priesthood ion the 8th of January 1871.
First appointment was Chaplain to the Mercy Convent Ballyjamesduff in 1871.the same year he was appointed Curate in Castlerahan.In 1872 transferred to Belturbet where he served until his appointment to Virginia in 1879.After his taking up his post as Administrator in 1885,he founded and became very enthusiastically involved with the old Cavan Catholic Club providing the comfortable and well appointed Snooker Hall adjacent to the old Presbytery.He was the first Reverend Chairman of the Club.
His untimely death occurred on the 22nd February 1894. Born in Corratinner Killinkere in 1878,son of Martin and Mary (NeeMcCabe) Comey, he studied in Rome where he obtained his Doctorate and was ordained there on the 24th of May 1902.First appointed to Belturbet and Drumlane.Came to Cavan as CC in 1903 and served the people of the town for twenty seven years.Chaplain to the British Army Barrack Hill from 1917 to after the Great War in 1919.Closely associated with the old Catholic Club, he was Chaplain and Reverend Chairman for a number of years.Appointed Adm in 1923.Very much beloved by the people of the town,he was sympathetic,charitable and caring and is still remembered with great affection.Later PP Virginia where he died on the 3rd of June 1950. Native of Corlurgan Cavan,son of James and Mary (nee Reilly) Finegan,.He was born in 1858 educated at Saint Patrick's College Cavan where he was ordained on the 18th of December 1881.Appointed CC Belturbet 1882 and later on the teaching staff of Saint Patrick's College.Appointed CC in Cavan in 1889.The following year he was transferred to Derrylin.Aappointed Curate in Laragh in 1893. Adm Cavan in 1898. Parish Priest of Templeport in 1902 and later PP in Ballinamore in 1908.He was consecrated Bishop of Kilmore in 1910.Dedicated his episcopacy to funding and erecting a suitable Cathedral for the Diocese and travelled extensively raising funds for this project.The Holy Rosary Sisters (1924),Norbertines (1924) and Loreto Sisters (1930) located to the Diocese at his request.Died on the 25th of January 1937..Buried along with his uncle Bishop Bernard Finegan in the crypt of the Cathedral ,where a beautiful 'Harry Clarke' stained glass window is dedicated to their memory by their niece Molly Finegan NT Corlurgan . Son of Hugh and Eileen Brady of Laragh,he was born in 1875.Ordained on the 31st of March 1902.Member of a very well known business family,he was uncle of Larry Brady The Cross Stradone.Served first as Chaplain to the Poor Clare Convent in Ballyjamesduff (1902),Curate in Virginia (1903),Carrigallen (1904) before coming to Cavan first in 1909. Appointed Administrator in 1915.He was very popular Chaplainof the Catholic Club and took a full part in their activities.Skillful Snooker player but excelled as a card player particularly Solo.Among his contempories were Joe O Rourke,Joe Smith (Courthouse) and Andy McEntee (Senior).Later Parish Priest of Drumgoon (1923) where he died on the 11th of November 1943.Among the priests to play a prominent role in the promotion of the Catholic Club were Fathers Thomas Masterson,Patrick Brady,Hugh J Owens and Charles Magee.No photographs are at hand at this time 23/11/2005. A native of Crosserlough,he was born on the 6th of January 1882 the son of Luke and Katherine O Reilly.Ordained in Rome on the 5th of June 1909.Served as a Curate in Cavan where he was closely associated with the Catholic Club.Short sojourns in Castletara and Ballinamore before renewing his acquaintenance with Cavan in 1915.He continued to expand the activities of the Catholic Club until by 1920 most of the prominent Families in the town were active members and engaged in various Church activities.Father Reilly was appointed Adm in 1930 and in 1936 Parish Priest of Ballinamore where he died on the 14th of November 1948. Born on the 10th of August 1891,son of Bernard and Brigid Maguire Crosserlough.Ordained on the 18th of June 1916.Dean in Saint Patrick's College before transferring to Cavan as CC in 1930.Appointed Adm in 1936 where he supervised the fundraising and erection of the new Cathedral.Forceful manner and gifted leader,expert on the quarrying and shaping of stone and reading detailed site maps, he was the driving force behind the successful construction of the Cathedral. He provided the Temperance Hall as a premises for the new CYMS in 1936 and acted as a dynamic Chairman of the Committee for 7 years with emphasis on the Spiritual nature of the Society.Later PP in Manorhamilton and Cootehill.He was Vicar General of the Diocese of Kilmore during the Inter Regnum of Bishops Lyons and Quinn (1949-1951).His untimely death occured at the age of 60 on the 21st of August 1951. Uncle of Fathers John and Benny Maguire both of whom were ordained priests for the Diocese of Kilmore. Born in Belpatrick in the Parish of Collon County Louth.He was Parish Priest in Drogheda and Vicar General to Cardinal McRory.Keen interest in the Irish language and noted for his work in promoting the cause for the Beatification of Blessed Oliver Plunkett and The Catholic Truth Society.Consecrated Bishop of Kilmore on the 3rd of October 1937.Within one year he was turning the sod for the new Cathedral.He had a great sense of occasion and promotion (clearing the debt on the Cathedral by 1947) and he was admirably aided and abetted by the Anglo Celt who marked each event in the construction of the Cathedral in banner headlines.In his first Pastoral Letter of 1938 called for the setting up of organisations such as the CYMS,Legion of Mary,Saint Vincent De Paul,Confraternity etc.He oversaw a complete reinvigoration of the Dioceses and was popular with both priests and people.His untimely death occured after a short illness of three weeks on the 27th of April 1949 and he is buried in the crypt of the Cathedral. First Chaplain to Cavan CYMS.Father James was born on the 10th of March 1887 to John and Mary Sheridan(nee Lynch) in Ballyjamesduff.Ordained to the Priesthood on the 21st of June 1914 in Maynooth College.He was posted first to Corlough until taking up the position of Chaplain to the British Army in Cavan in 1916.Aftetr the War posted to Swanlinbar in 1919 where he stayed until 1929 when he became Curate in Crosserlough.Appointed to the Cathedral Parish in 1936,he was immediatly assigned as Chaplain to the recently formed CYMS.Strict disciplinarian he didn't tolerate rowdism or lack of charity by the members and encouraged the development of the Spiritual aspect of the Society.Handed over to Father Malachy Byrne on his apointment as Parish Priest of Blacklion in 1941.Later appointed as Parish Priest to Deerylin in 1947.His final post was Parish Priest Kileshandra (1953) where he died in his 90th year on the 11th of May 1976. Son of James and Mary O Reilly 'Father Jimmy' was born on the 16th of March 1904 in New York and ordained in Paris on the 30th of May 1926.Served in Brentwood,Cootehill,Mullagh,Saint Patrick's College and Glenfarne before coming to Cavan as a Curate in 1941.He was later appointed Adm in Cavan in 1943.He served as Reverend Chairman of the Committee of Cavan CYMS for 15 years and was a keen and expert card player.His commanding presence and hearty laugh were his trademark.Spearheaded the delicate negotiations between the Slashers and Harps that eventually led to the formation of Cavan Gaels in February 1957, he was unanimously elected the first Chairman of the Club.Later Parish Priest of Bailieborough (1958).Transferred to Cootehill in 1968.He was Vicar General of the Diocese of Kilmore.Died on the 1st of February 1985,he is buried in Saint Michael's Cemetery Cootehill. Son of Terence and Margaret (nee McQuillan) Byrne, born on the 6th of June 1906 in Drumhurt Kill Cootehill.Ordained in 1932.He served first in England before coming to Cavan in 1938.Joined the CYMS at the invitation of Father John Maguire on the 29th of September 1938.Enjoyed both billiards and a game of cards.He had a great friendly style and endeared himself to the membership.Appointed Chaplain in 1941.Internationally recognised Fly Fisherman, he loved to recall the exploits of his fellow friends of like tastes (Sean Young,Tommy Donohoe,George Maloney,Mick Smyth,Norman Cinamond , Reverend George Millar and Jack O' Neill) to name but a few.He was appointed Parish Priest of Laragh in 1953, where he ministered for 14 years before transfering to Carrigallen where he served as a much loved Parish Priest for a quarter of a century until his death on the 18th of July 1992 .Uncle of Malachy (Drumnavanagh) and Tom (Billis Drumalee) Byrne.Father Malachy is buried in Carrigallen
Born on the 12th of November 1914 son of Patrick and Margaret (Nee Shaffrey) in Virginia.Twin brother of Phil (Ritz Bar).Ordained to the Priesthood 22nd of June1941.Appointed to the staff Saint Patrick's College in 1942.He played a major part in the development of the GAA which resulted in the ultimate success of the Senior County team.Later Curate(1953) and Adm(1968) in Cavan.Founder member and first Vice Chairman of Cavan Gaels (1957).His loyalty and committment to the membership of the CYMS endured after the enforced evacuation from the Presbytery Premises He played a pivotal role in securing accomodation from the British Legion and later the acquisition of the Hut from Lord Farnham .Died on Saint Patrick's Day 1987,he is buried in Manorhamilton in the shadow of his beloved Lough Melvin. Born on the 21st of April 1922,son of Andrew and Marcella (Nee Scanlon) McManusy.He was ordained to the Priesthood on the 22nd of June 1947.He served first in Saint Patrick's College(1947) before going to England in 1948.Diocesan Examiner from 1952-1958 when he was appointed Curate to Cavan Parish.Served as Adm in Cavan from 1974 -1980.Along with Peggy Willock SRN Surgical Hospital initiated the Annual Diocesan Pilgrimmage to Lourdes with which he is still actively associated.Vicar-General of the Diocese (1976).Appointed Parish Priest of Crosserlough in 1980.Presently Pastor Emeritus in Crosserlough.Always showed great interest and enthusism for the CYMS and guaranteed the loan by which the CYMS purchased the Hut from Lord Farnham in 1976. Father Thomas D O Dowd born on the 8th of February 1925 son of Thomas and Elizabeth O Dowd in Kinawley County Fermanagh.Ordained in Saint Patrick's College Maynooth on the 19th of June 1949.Curate in Birmingham,Glenade,Doobally,Teemore before coming to Cavan as a Curate in 1968 and later Adm in 1980.Outstanding Priest,he always gave of his best and was a dynamic and personable Spiritual Director of Cavan CYMS.Very involved with improving the Liturgy and projection of the Cathedral Choir .Founder member of the Social Services- all the early meetings were held in the Hut..Accomplished musician,his favourite instrument was the piano accordion which he played with great gusto and delight at many of the Parish Parties.Latterly revered Canon, Parish Priest and Pastor Emeritus in Cootehill where he died at the age of 78 on the 22nd of May 2003..He is buried in Saint Michael's Cemetry. Born in the Vale Balieboroon the 8th of September 1939 ,son of Patrick and Anne (Nee Lynch) Kelly.Educted at the local National School and Saint Patrick's College Cavan.Ordained to the Priesthood ion the 20th of June 1965.Curate in Cavan 1974 when he was first involved with the CYMS as Chaplain.Later Adm Cavan 1985 He developed and landscaped the three major cemeteries in the Parish and made them easier accessible to all.Played a major role in the acquisition of the Hut from Lord Farnham and The British Legion in 1976 and subsequent renovation and development of the premises.Led by example and enthusiasm the successful fundraising to defray the substantial debt incurred by the CYMS.Appointed Parish Priest in Castlerahan in 1990.Contributes regularly to the popular 'Reflections' religious column in the 'Anglo Celt'.Direct,concise, clear style of communicating.Presently CC Castlerahan.
Outstanding footballer with Cavan and Bailieborough Shamrocks with whom he won a Senior Championship medal in 1964. Father Anthony was born in Balieboro on the 22nd of July 1950 son of Liam and Margaret Fagan (nee Lynch).Educated at Baileboro NS,Saint Patrick' College Cavan and Maynooth where he was ordained on the 8th of June 1975.His first posting was to Cavan where he served the CYMS as a very active Chaplain.After many years in the doldrums the Club purchased their premises in 1976 and Father Anthony was to the fore in both the negotiations and the fundraising for this project..Later appointed to Cotehill,he returned to Cavan as Administrator in the year 2000 where he reorganised the general structures of the Parish with incresed coperation and participation by the Laity.Attention to detail and preparation,he has a very fine speaking voice and all his homilies and sermons were delived with clarity and conviction.Included the deceased Bishops and Priests of the Dioceses by name on their Anniversaries during the introuduction to morning Mass. Appointed Parish Priest of Killinkere in August 2005. Born on the 7th of November 1940,son of James and Maureen Murphy (nee McHugh) Drumcannon in the Parish of Kinawley County Cavan.Ordained to the Priesthood on the 19th of June 1966. Bursar and teacher in Saint Patricks College for a period of twenty years before making the short journey to the town in 1986.He served as both CC and Administrator (1990).Popular with both the members and Committee of Cavan CYMS.He encouraged the development and subsequent building of the new premises and continued his enthusiastic active association with the Club as Adm. until his transfer to Bailieboroin 1997. Responsible for the funding, purchase and installation of the priceless Harry Clarke stained glass windows in the Cathedral (1994).Presently Parish Priest in Bailieborough. Native of Killeshandra where he was born on the 17th November 1950.Son of Packy and Susan Phair (Doherty) Ordained on the 8th of June 1975.Served first in Maghera (1975),Drumlane (1976).Emigrant Chaplain (1979) before being appointed CC Drumahaire in 1983. Outsanding Spiritual Directo of Cavan CYMS, wonderful relationship with the committee and members.He was Chaplain in 1997 when the CYMS moved into their new premises .He is now Parish Priest in Rosinver. Born in Mullymagowan Lavey on the 24th of September1959, son of Peter and Margaret McMahon (Nee O Reilly) ..Educated at the local National School,Saint Patrick's College Maynooth and Waterford.Ordained to the Priesthood in the Cathedral Cavan on the 19th of June 1983..His first appointment was CC Cavan.Outstandingly popular Chaplain of Cavan CYMS with an easy manner and welcoming smile-he participated in many of the Club's activities and snooker competitions.Later apponted Dean of Saint Patrick's College where he served until joining Father Benny Fitzpatrick on the Kilmore Mission to Lagos from 1994-2000 .Presently Curate in Carrigallen County Leitrim. Son of Joseph and Agnes Casey Tierlahood Stradone.Educated at the local National School and Cavan Vocational School before studying for the Priesthood at Saint Patrick's College Maynooth.Ordained on the 9th of June 1996.Father Paul's first appointment was Curate in Manorhamilton until his transfer to Cavan in 1999 where he was to spend five happy, fruitful years.Headed the Committee in Butlersbridge for the successful funding and construction of a suitable residence for the Curate.Noted for his pleasant,affable demeanor.Eembellished the Liturgy with his enthusiastic singing and inclusion of the Laity .Outsatndingly popular Chaplain of Cavan CYMS,he had a personal rapport with all of the Membership and is recalled with great affection and respect for his work on behalf of the Club.Transferred to Upper Lavey as Curate in 2004,he also serves as Diocesan Secretary and Chaplain to Loreto College. Native of Knockatean Drumahaire County Leitrim.Born on the 13th of May 1959 son of Stephen and Kate (Nee McPartlan) Gilhooley.Educated at the local National School,Saint Patrick's College and Maynooth.Ordained to the Priesthood on the 17th of June 1984.Served as a teacher in both Virginia Vocational and Saint Patrick's College.Accomplished handballer,he encouraged and nurtured the talent in Saint Patrick's College and the continued success of Cavan handballers particularly Paul Brady on the National and World stage is a direct result of his encouragement and coaching.Curate in Cavan since 2003.His eloquent,concise Sermons and simple background detail add greatly to the understanding of the Liturgy.Apointed Administrator of the Parish in August 2005,he continues to reside in Butlersbridge where he is actively involved in the recent Under Age successes of Saint Aidan's GFC. Native of Williamstown County Galway.Father Tom entered the Norbertine Novitiate in 1983.Attended Saint Clares College Ballyjamesduff before studying for the Priesthood at Saint Patricks College Maynooth.Ordained in 1991.Ministered in Killnacrott Abbey,Dundalk and Dublin.Since 2001 he has been Curate in Aughnasheelin County Leitrim.Appointed to Cavan Parish in August 2005.Enjoys television,current affairs,walking and most of all a game of snooker or computing with the members and newly acquired friends in Cavan CYMS.
