October 6th 1917 Cavan Slashers V Crosserlough Young Irelanders Show Grounds Cavan Admission 6d and Stand 6d extra. Drawing 1-1 all at the interval with the Slashers scoring through a fisted goal by Tom Kelly and a magnificent long range point from Tom Maguire from Tullyco. In the second half matters were very even in a tough uncompromising battle with Crosserlough edging in front with minutes to play. Jack McConnell captain of Cavan Slashers levelled for the town side with a point from along range free. The replay on the 4th of November followed a similar pattern in another exciting keenly contested game played in a downpour with conditions underfoot very soft. The Slashers led by 1-1 to 1-0 at the Interval with Tom Kelly punching to the net and Tom Maguire again scoring from long range. In the second half Crosserlough edged in front again by a point only to be thwarted once again by a well taken point from a free from Captain Jack McConnell with the sides finishing level again at 1-2 each to bring the game to a second replay on November 18th 1917.
November 18th 1917.The Slashers trained each night for the replay completing long runs around the town and as a result were faster fitter and sharper. Crosserlough won the toss and decided to play down the hill towards the College goals against a stiff wind in the first half. Leading by 1 Point scored from a free by Jack McConnell to Nil at half time the Slashers turned on the style in the second half with a goal from Fitzpatrick followed by points from McGahern Jerry Kelly and Fitzpatrick again. To leave the final score Cavan Slashers 1-4 Crosserlough Young Irelanders Nil. The three games were refereed by T P Clarke a member of the well known Clarke family who are outstanding Gaels in Teemore County Fermanagh. September 26th 1922 Huge turn out for the Slashers V Virginia Blues at Cavan Show Grounds. The County Board were looking for a big gate as they had the expense of staging the Final including awarding solid gold medals to the winners but they had plunged into debt to the tune of £20.Welcoming an East Cavan team to the Final it was more promising as the population in that area was much bigger than in some of the other Cavan football strongholds. Seamus Gilheaney proposed and Paddy Baxter seconded the proposal to play the game in the Show Grounds Cavan at 4 PM on September 21st 1922.After Drumcrave Band had paraded the teams the Slashers won the toss and elected to play into the sun towards the Entrance end. Tom Kelly was magnificent and soon put through the Virginia goal twice raising the red flag for the Slashers. Cahill at full forward then sprung into action with two great points to put the Slashers ahead 2-2 to Nil at the interval. In the second half the game belonged to Virginia and most particularly Paul Doyle from Kildare with Virginia scoring 2-4 to the Slashers solitary point from Cahill. The Final score was Virginia 2-4 Cavan Slashers 2-3.Paul Doyle scored all but one point of the Virginia total and was acclaimed by friend and foe alike. Later the Slashers launched an investigation into the eligibility of Paul; Doyle a native of Kildare who was serving in the Irish Army in Bailieboro at the time. It was found that Paul Doyle was illegal and the game was awarded to Cavan Slashers. Cavan Slashers V Bailieboro Shamrocks Cavan League Champions at the Show Grounds Cavan. Game played in a downpour with conditions underfoot treacherous in this the worst Summer in living memory where the concern of most people was not the match but the saving of the Harvest. On their way to the Final the Slashers beat Maghera and Templeport. Bailieboro brought a huge support by bicycle lorries horse and carts. Indeed the Celt remarks that all modes of conveyance were pressed into service to bring supporters from the East Cavan town to the Showground's and they outnumbered the Slashers supporters 3-1.Given the inclement weather conditions the County Board were delighted with the Gate which amounted to £36.Tom Kelly and brother Jerry were outstanding for the Slashers and scored a goal each in the 1st half to leave the half time score Cavan Slashers 2-0 Bailieboro Shamrocks Nil. Billy Flynn scored the winning point after a terrific rally by the Shamrocks when they scored 0-5 without reply to leave the Cavan Slashers winners by 2-1 to 0-5.Mr McGovern was the Referee and he was inclined to let the game flow at the expense of some blatant fouling and heavy tackling by both sides. Independent linesmen and Umpires introduced for County Finals for the first time made a great difference and were a decided asset. Three members of the Kelly family Tom Jerry and Fred from Connolly Street were the outstanding members of the Slashers team and brought great credit on their family and Club. Meanwhile Slashers supporters call on the Cavan Urban Council to accord their heroes a Civic Reception n recognition of their feat in winning the County Senior Championship for the 3rd time in 7 years. September 26th 1925 Tough hard uncompromising battle against Cornafean before a much smaller but very vocal enthusiastic crowd in perfect weather and underfoot conditions at Cavan Showground's. Cornafean won the toss and played into the Entrance goal in the first half. No quarter asked or given Tom Kelly the Slashers’ star forward was singled out for special treatment and was carried from the field twice unconscious victim of some over robust play on the part of the Cornafean men. Cornafean led by 3 points to 2 at the Interval. The Slashers’ points coming from Billy Flynn and Army man John Murphy. The Slashers had the edge in the 2nd half and their fast quick play and close marking restricted Cornafean to just 1 point while John Murphy scored a great goal and Billy Flynn pointed to leave the Final Score Cavan Slashers 1-3 Cornafean 0-4.John Murphy Paddy Murray and Jerry Kelly were the mainsprings of the Slashers’ great win against tough uncompromising opposition. Jack Clarke Captain with the Cup was carried shoulder high from the Ground by delighted Slashers’ supporters. Referee Seamus Gilheaney. Andy McEntee Anglo Celt Sports Editor while saluting the Slashers and their great performance against their more illustrious opponents bemoans the fact that sportsmanship was not the order of the day and the match ball was scarified by the use of long nailed boots on the part of unnamed participants-a very dangerous practice and one that must be stamped out before some of the players are seriously injured. September 3rd 1927 Cavan Slashers played Virginia Blues in a poorly contested County Final in Breffni Park. Strange performance from the Slashers who had beaten arch rival Cornafean in a thrilling Semi Final but they always had enough in hand to contain a Virginia side that lacked motivation and hunger for the fray. The referee was H J O Reilly from Gowna. Slashers got a dream start when Willie Flynn received a great pass from Tommy Smith and shot to the net. John Murphy put the Slashers further ahead with a point from a free. Vincent Dunne fielded and parted to the inrushing Paddy Duffy who shot a point before ace marksman Billy Flynn shot another beautiful point to leave Cavan Slashers 1-3 to Virginia’s 0-3 ahead at the Interval. Virginia laid siege to the Slasher’s goal in the 1st 7 minutes of the second half. Great defensive work by JJ Clarke Tom Crowe and Eddie McCormack. The Slashers gradually took control of the game and great combination play by Tommy Smith and Louis Mallon let Paddy Duffy in for another point. Vincent Dunne had the last score a point on the stroke of full time. Team Charlie Ronaghan Jack Clarke Captain Tom Crowe Eddie McCormack Guard Boyle C Hueston Peter Reilly John Murphy Dermot Morgan Guard Storey Tommy ‘Tight’ Smith Vincent Dunne Willie Flynn Paddy Duffy and Louis Mallon. The defending Champions were Maghera McFinns. Two members of the Cavan Slashes team emigrated to America on the day before the Final. Johnny Murray and Packie Sheridan members of the last Slashers triumph in 1925.Sheridan was the most promising player in the County up until his recent injury. While wishing the two well Andy McEntee bemoans the scourge of emigration draining the young blood out of the country and the county! The Foresters Brass Band paraded the teams with Virginia playing in Blue and the Slashers in Red before the game played a rousing version of the National Anthem and entertained the crowd at half time. August 17th 1930 Huge crowd in excess of 2,000 with record gate receipts of £102 witness a tough hard game with no frills and little combination play as Cavan Slashers defeated the reigning Champions Cornafean 1-4 to 0-4 at Breffni Park. Morning dull and overcast with rain forecast for the afternoon. Both Cavan Labour Fife and Drum Band conducted by Mr Michael Donohoe and Forester’s Brass Band conducted by Mr C Fitzpatrick were in attendance and entertained the appreciative crowd before and during half time with the Foresters Band parading the teams and playing the National Anthem where many of the crowd joined in singing. Rev Hugh M Smith Saint Louis Rectory Needham USA was introduced to the team captains before the game. Mr F McKeown Cootehill was a very efficient if fussy referee and did not let the play flow and develop like previous encounters between these great rivals. Cornafean playing in their famous red shirts won the toss and decided to defend the Entrance goal in the first half. The teams were tied at 0-2 each at half time after Cornafean had the lion’s share of possession. Sean Farrelly from Bruskey had the Slashers ahead after only 1 minute from a free 20 yards out. After 10 minutes Andy Conlon struck a great point for the Slashers. With play flowing from end to end exchanges were tight and tough but no further scores were recorded as the rain began to fall at the end of the 1st half. Fay and Colleran were magnificent for the Slashers and Danny Smith in goals brought off a number of spectacular saves and on the day was just unbeatable. In the second half played in a downpour with the ball becoming increasingly harder to handle Cornafean laid siege to the Slasher’s goal but try as they may they never breached the defence with Owenie Fay dropping back as sweeper and Jack Clarke playing at centre half back. Louis Blessing was brought out to the 40 helping out as a third midfielder. Midway through the half came the move that won the Championship for Cavan Slashers when Paddy Duffy crossed high into the square Sean Farrelly rushing in broke the ball dribbled around Cornafean full back Packy Dinneny to give the advancing goalkeeper no chance as he shot to the net. Sean Farrelly once again struck for the Slashers with a point from a free 5 minutes from the end and the Slashers forced a 50 and were on the attack when the referee blew the final whistle. Cavan Slashers 1-4 Cornafean 0-4.All the scores for the Slashers were recorded by Sean Farrelly with Andy Conlon corner forward adding a point early in the first half. This was the 7th County Senior triumph for Cavan Slashers the others were achieved in 1890 when the Slashers beat Ballyconnell First Ulster’s 1917 1922 1924 1925 1927.Amidst scenes of unbridled joy the cup was presented to Cavan Slashes Captain Jack Clarke who congratulated both teams on a wonderful contest played in a sporting and exemplary manner. Packy Masterson Captain of Cornafean was quick to congratulated the Slashers and both he and his team mates agreed that the better team won on the day. The many stewards on duty ensured that there were no ugly incidents or pitch invasions from those seated on the sideline. September 13th 1931 Cavan Slashers retain their title against old rivals Cornafean in a rousing hard fought closely contested Final at Breffni Park. No quarter given or asked while Referee J Delaney Dublin let the play flow. This was one of the great finals with the play flowing quickly from end to end and the contestants kept up the frantic pace for the full hour. Conditions were ideal with the morning rain clearing dry ball and perfect underfoot conditions. The Slashers played beautiful strong hard interchanging football built up a lead of 3-2 to 0-7 at half time. Louis Blessing at full forward was dangerous throughout and came in for close attention from the Cornafean backs indeed there were three lengthy stoppages during the game for attention to Louis Blessing who was always very prominent. Louis Blessing opened the scoring with a point but later a ruck formed and Louis Blessing was felled by some Cornafean over zealous defenders. Cornafean then took control and were cruising at 0-4 to the Slashers 0-1 when Louis Blessing sent in a rocket which hit the crossbar before hitting the back of the Cornafean net 1-1 to 0-4 Terry Coyle at half forward then had a beautiful point high across the black spot. Strong men Tommy ’Tight' Smith and Louis Blessing forced the Cornafean goalkeeper (Packy Dinneny) across the line for a goal to put the Slashers ahead 2-2 to Cornafean’s 0-5.Then Sean Farrelly centre half forward from Bruskey struck a magnificent goal low and hard to the corner of the Cornafean men. Cornafean replied with a couple of points before the Interval to leave the Slashers 3-2 to 0- 7 ahead. Cornafean brought Willie Young back into goals to replace Packy Dinneny at half time and laid siege o the Slasher’s goal in the early stages of the second half but after weathering the storm the Slashers replied with two well taken points from frees by Sean Farrelly to leave the final score 3-4 to 8 points. In the second half both defences were on top but with Cornafean chasing the game they were restricted to just one point by a magnificent Slashers team where the forwards and centre field funnelled back to thwart the Cornafean onslaught. Slashers Danny Smith Tom Crowe Eddie McCormack J Fagan John Molloy JJ Clarke Captain Larry Farrelly Paddy Colleran Owenie Fay Terry Coyle Sean Farrelly Packie Boylan Louis Mallon Tommy ’Tight’ Smith and Louis Blessing. Colleran was Man of the Match with Owenie Fay not far behind and justifying his recent call up to the Senior County team with a magnificent display. Jack Clarke at centre half was the brains of the side using both feet and head very effectively. Larry Farrelly at half back had a wonderful hour. Tom Crowe was as sound as a Rock on which many of the Cornafean attacks perished. Louis Blessing was a Terror to the Cornafean defence his strength and determination played a major part in the Slashers victory and his early solo goal settled his team mates and totally unsettled the opposition who had to largely rely on fouling the burly full forward when he headed for goal. Sean Farrelly on the 40 showed his class took his goal brilliantly and scored frequently from placed balls. Terry Coyle was always prominent for the Slashers and took his point brilliantly in the first half. Magnificent team effort by Cavan Slashers and by far their best performance in a Senior Final since they broke into the big time in 1917.They have now won the title in 18901917 1922 1924 1925 1927 1930 and 1931.Seamus Gilheaney Chairman Cavan County Board congratulated both teams on a wonderful game played hard and uncompromising as befits these two great rivals. He then called on Dr Tom Plunkett from Kilnaleck to present for the first time the Blessed Oliver Plunkett Cup donated by his brother Rev Henry E Plunkett BA California. Jack Clarke paid tribute to his team mates for their dedication and commitment resulting in this magnificent display. He also congratulated old rivals Cornafean for such a hard sporting well contested game .Packy Masterson Captain of the Cornafean team said that “the Slashers were very lucky to win the title but he hoped that everybody would be fit and healthy for next year’s Final when he looked forward to reaping revenge for this bitter defeat.” Very well attended game with all the clubs in the County represented and gate receipts of £78.The Cavan Foresters INF Brass Band paraded the teams played the National Anthem and entertained the large crowd at half time.

October 19th 1941 Cavan Slashers captained by Bridge Street native Paddy Conaty beat the holders Cornafean going for their 6th consecutive title in hurricane conditions at Breffni Park to win their 9th Cavan Senior Football Championship before a small but very enthusiastic attendance who paid total gate receipts of £52 to witness a tough hard encounter where hard knocks were the order of the day. The attendance was only half the expected crowd as the cyclists could not take to the road due to the hurricane conditions and the severe shortage of petrol due to the Emergency. There were many lengthy delays due to pitch invasions which Civic Guards and Stewards did their best to contain. After Cavan Labour Band paraded the teams and played the National Anthem Referee Tommy Reilly from Cootehill threw in the ball to set the game in motion. Cornafean playing with the hurricane had an early point from veteran Mick Dinneny from a pass by the mercurial Peadair Doyle who scored a great goal after 8 minutes .Joe Devlin replied for the Slashers with a point following an intricate movement with MJ Magee. Cornafean had the lion’s share of the play and were awarded a penalty only for Pa Sheridan in the Slashers’ goal to make a great save. Sweeping downfield Paddy Conaty Captain scored a great point. Eddie McEntee then scored a beautiful solo goal for the Slashers and Joe Devlin from a free had another point for the Slashers before half time to leave the Interval score Cavan Slashers 1-4 to Cornafean 1-2.With the hurricane in the second half it was expected that the Slashers would score freely but they reckoned without the courage and tenacity of the Cornafean defence and the nature of the swirling wind which favoured one side then the other. On the contrary Cornafean had most of the play in the first 20 minutes of the second half but their only reward was a point from a free by J F McGahern. In the last ten minutes the Slashers once again exerted their superiority and Joe Devlin had a great chance to seal the game for the town club but shot inches wide from the penalty spot. The final whistle came soon afterwards with Cavan Slashers on the attack. Big Tom O Reilly Captain of Cornafean said that “they had the Cup long enough and it was good for football in the county to see the Slashers emerge again as a football power.” Well attended victory dance in the Town Hall where there were many speeches praising the exploits of the new champions.
Now Gaels of Breffni come listen to my song
‘Tis only just a ditty so I won’t detain you long
In praise of
the Champions of 1941
The gallant Slashers’ team
(Chorus after each verse)
Goalman full backs half backs too
Midfield three quarter line, their equals are but few
Pass to the forward line and keep the goal in view
Is the motto of the Slashers’ team
Sheridan, the Goalman is worthy of great praise
His display in the Final was talked about for days
The Reds would still be Champions but for his brilliant saves
A hero of the Slashers’ team
The fullbacks worked hard and always did their share
Jim McGahern Jack Browne and Frank Dowling from Kildare
A good line of defenders hard to beat anywhere
The backbone of the Slashers’ team
The halfback line have already made their name
Tom Cahill Joe Greenan and T P O Reilly from Drumlane
No matter where they go they always play the game
A credit to the Slashers’ team
The centerfield of every team has go to bear the brunt
Where would you find a better pair than Conaty and Hunt ?
But the man who bravely paved the way was Fallon in the front
Three great players on the Slashers’ team.
On the left wing is Devlin on the right is McEntee
Full forwards are John Johnston Patsy Lynch and Sonny Magee
Keen to notch the scores that makes victory to be
For the gallant Slashers’ team
Bill Doonan is always on the team whenever he is in town
With Finnerty and Kennedy who never let them down
These are the lads that make up the team and train ‘til dark
To bring success to the boys in blue at home in Breffni Park
So now my song is ended and time to wind it up
I hope I’ve mentioned all the lads who won the Plunkett Cup
Next year ‘tis hoped to do the same and have another sup
Of drink and toast to all the Slashers’ team.

September 12th 1965 Cavan Gaels upset the odds by beating hot favourites Bailieboro Shamrocks to win their 1st County Senior Championship since their foundation in 1957.The Gaels seemed to thrive on setbacks when their star forward Phil Lightning Murray was ruled out because of injury as was solid defenders Mick Ryan and Hugo Cafferty they brought in a couple of inexperienced young players who all rose to the challenge admirably. Jim McDonnell gave the greatest display ever seen in a County Final akin to his much heralded 1955 display against Kerry in the All Ireland Semi Final which John D Hickey of the Irish Independent named as the best display ever given by any player during his career covering the games at Headquarters. The teams were paraded before the start by the Breffni Boys Band who also played the National Anthem many of the large attendance basking in the perfect conditions joined in singing Amhrain Na Fíann. Referee Mick Higgins sent the teams away after Hughie Smith Courthouse tossed the coin between captains Pat Clarke and Jim McDonnell .Jim McDonnell from a free out at midfield opened the scoring with a point for the Gaels. Paddy Maguire from a pass by Jim McDonnell scored a beautiful point in the 7th minute. Terry Smith went high to field a cross by Jim McDonnell and with his trusted left foot sent over for a great Gaels’ point in the11th minute. Then came the score of the game from a long clearance by Brian Tighe who was magnificent at full back the ball transferred to Jim McDonnell who soloed at speed into the heart of the Bailieboro defence to send a rocket to the net from 30 yards on 21 minutes. The Gaels were well on top at this stage and in the 25th minute Jim McDonnell sent in a beautiful pass to Larry Ready and the Connolly Street man pivoted and sent a pile driver to the back of the Shamrock’s net to leave the Gaels winning by double scores at the interval 2-4 to 0-5.It was all Bailieboro Shamrocks in the second half and they gradually closed the gap with a goal from Pat Clarke and a point from sub Tom O Reilly. The Gaels’ full back line of Donal Crowe Brian Tighe and veteran Colm Smith repulsed attack after attack from a rampant Bailieboro and from a clearance by Brian Tighe Jim McDonnell gained possession and sent in a speculative lob to the square which went all the way to the net for the Gaels’ third goal of the afternoon. The game was still there for the Shamrocks to win but they shot 5 consecutive wides before Eamonn Curley from an exquisite pass from the brilliant Pat Clarke tied the game with 5 minutes to go. The response from the Gaels was as spectacular as it was unexpected Jack McEntee who along with Jim McDonnell dominated midfield for the Gaels caught the kick out and soloed through only to be inches wide. From the resultant kick out a resurgent Jim McDonnell gained possession sent in a high lob which was fielded brilliantly by Paddy Maguire who side stepped the onrushing Felim Kelly to score the winning point. Mick Higgins blew the full time whistle at the kick out and the Gaels were Champions for the first time. Tough hard sporting game with fouling to a minimum and referee Higgins kept the play flowing from end to end. Great credit due to Gaels’ selectors and mentors who in the face of insurmountable odds never panicked. Bailieboro Shamrocks were over confident and didn’t get into their stride until the second half when they realised that their title was under threat. They then proceeded to kick wide after wide before the Gaels came with their late flourish to deservedly win the contest. The Gaels won the game by their strength and skill down the middle Brian Tighe had his greatest ever game for the Gaels at full back Pat Gaffney was magnificent at centre half back. Jack McEntee and Jim McDonnell dominated midfield for most of the game while Danny Thomas on the 40 was the playmaker in chief and in the second half doubled up as third midfielder. Paddy Maguire at full forward scored the first and the winning point for Cavan Gaels and his physical presence troubled the Shamrock’s defence all through. In goals John Foley O Rourke celebrating his 40th Birthday got very little opportunity to show his range of skills such was he cover afforded by the full back line and Gerry Carroll and Eamonn McGovern at half back who attacked at every opportunity. Veteran Cathal Young showed some great touches and steadied the ship in the storm in the second half. The youngsters P J Carroll Larry Ready and Terry Smith all contributed handsomely to an historic victory. Team John Foley O Rourke Donal Crowe Brian Tighe Colm Smith Jerry Carroll Pat Gaffney Eamonn McGovern Jim McDonnell Captain Jack McEntee Cathal Young Danny Thomas PJ Carroll Larry Ready Paddy Maguire and Terry Smith. Adverse comments after the game about the state of the Oliver Plunkett Cup which Bailieboro brought to the ground expecting to take home again should have been shined up and cleaned. The trophy was presented to Cavan Gaels captain Jim McDonnell by T P O Reilly Chairman Cavan County Board who himself played a prominent role in the Slashers last win in the competition in 1941.
Same Week Tommy Kelly Post Office pens the ballad (Air Slievenamon)
Here’s a tribute to the Cavan Gaels who won the County Cup
. They showed the doubters, diehards that they too had the stuff
. When they met and beat the ‘Shamrocks’ a great team of renown
And brought the Plunkett trophy back again to Cavan Town
In goal was ageless ‘Foley’ Rourke who is with them now so long
But he still can stop the bullets or oblige you with a song
The full back line is Colm Smith, Brian Tighe and Donal Crowe
They showed us from the very start that they did fear no foe
At Centre half Pat Gaffney, sure he played a leading part.
And his solos up the middle gave his team new heart
He got great support from ‘Scobie’ Carroll a wing back who can fly
And McGovern on the other side can take balls from the sky
At centre field Jack McEntee and peerless Jim McDonnell
Made one wonder if in fact we were watching Mick O Connell
They fielded high ,they fielded safe, they were a joy to behold
For years to come of Jack and Jim, great stories will be told
Danny Thomas on the ‘40’his praises will be sung
with P J Carroll on the wing and the veteran who is ‘Young’
All played their parts and did their best, they are tough alert and speedy
And they gave great service to their ‘fulls’Terry Smityh,Maguire and Ready
But in our joy, let’s not forget the men of ‘41
Tom Meehan, Coyle and Conaty great sportsmen everyone.
It matters not how long the wait or how long you may have taken.
You won the Cup in ’63 and young blood you will awaken.

The Gaels were coasting early in the second half when they led by 0-6 points but the experienced Crosserlough men with Pee Cahill and JJ O Reilly wresting control at centre field whittled down the lead with Gene Cusack kicking the equaliser from a 35 yard free with only 2 minutes of play remaining. Scorers for the Gaels Charlie Donohoe 0-4 (2 frees), Pat McNamara 0-2 (1 free), Noel Smith 1 goal, Phil Murray 0-2 and J J and Haulie Reilly (0-1 each) Crosserlough scorers Gene Cusack 1-5 (0-3 from frees) P McKiernan 1-1 Hugh Sheridan JJ O Reilly 0-1 each. September 26th 1975:Cavan Gaels capture their second Senior Football title in magnificent style-penalty conversion by P J Carroll in the 19th minute of the second half destroys Crosserlough’s hopes. Played before an attendance of 4,800 who again paid record gate receipts of £2,322.Cavan Gaels 1-11 Crosserlough 0-8.Gaels displayed their skill, determination and most of all their fitness in the final quarter to trounce a lack lustre Crosserlough. Tommy Moran (Referee) from Ballinamore had no problem letting a sporting contest flow from end to end without any major intervention in perfect weather conditions. The Gaels were wining their first Senior title since 1965 having unsuccessfully contested the 1958 1967 and 1970 finals against Crosserlough. PJ Carroll the only survivor of the Gaels first Championship wining team is the Gaels Man of the Match and is pictured receiving the RTS trophy from Manager Jimmy (Inky) Sheridan. PJ received 8 points from the panel of judges while Peter Cahill Crosserlough and JJ Reilly (Cavan Gaels ) ran him close with 7 points. Crosserlough could not contain the Gaels’ youthful exuberance speed and team work .Aidan Elliott in goal did all required of him but was called upon infrequently Eugene Reilly kept Gene Cusack the Crosserlough danger man in a vice like grip and never allowed him the same latitude as in the drawn game Gabriel Kelly brought all his experience to the full back berth and inspired confidence all around him Jimmy Fay Louis Blessing Dermot Dalton were outstanding throughout and never allowed their opponents any room. Oliver Galligan was undoubtedly the star of the defence and helped out in attack frequently. He was only able to play after receiving a pain killing injection from Doctor Matt McHugh before the start. PJ Carroll was a revelation after his poor second half performance in the drawn game when he had to be substituted while JJ O Reilly played a captain’s role at midfield where the Gaels dominated right from the start. All of the Gaels forwards got on the scoring sheet where Pat McNamara Haulie Reilly and Noel Smith were a busy and effective half forward line. 35 year old Phil Lightning Murray Paddy Reilly and Charlie Donohoe had far too much craft experience speed and strength for the Crosserlough full back line who were largely left chasing shadows. The Breffni Boys Band and Kingscourt Brass Band paraded the teams before the game played the National Anthem and entertained the large crowd at the interval. Cavan Gaels won the toss and played with the wind into the town goal in the 1st half and led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the interval. Scorers for the Gaels: PJ Carroll 1-03 (1 Penalty and 1 free), Pat McNamara 0-2 (Frees), Haulie Reilly 0-2 and Paddy Reilly, Phil Murray, Noel Smith and Charlie Donohoe 0-1 point each. Crosserlough Peter Cahill 0-3 Gene Cusack 0-2 (Frees) Hugh Sheridan Peter Galligan and Tom Rehill 0-1 each. Cavan Gaels Senior Champions 1975:Aidan Elliott, Eugene Reilly, Gabriel Kelly, Jimmy Fay, Louis Blessing, Dermot Dalton, Oliver Galligan, JJ Reilly (Captain),PJ Carroll, Pat McNamara,Haulie Reilly, Noel Smith, Charlie Donohoe, Paddy Reilly and Phil Murray, JJ Reilly Captain Cavan Gaels received the Saint Oliver Plunkett Cup on behalf of Cavan Gaels from County Board Chairman PC Donohoe and is congratulated by Hugh Sheridan Captain Crosserlough. Dermot Dalton captains Cavan Gaels to win their 3rd Senior Football title in
brilliant style beating the holders Saint Mary’s (Castlerahan/Mountnuggent) 3-13
to 1-6 in a one sided final in beautiful weather conditions at Breffni Park.
Played before an attendance of 4,982 who paid record gate receipts of £3,710.
The team played with a great deal of assurance and poise and their ultimate
success was evident from their great start and goals from Charlie Donohoe in the
22nd minute of the1st half and Pat McNamara 9 minutes into the 2nd half killed
off the game as a contest The Gaels led by 1-7 to 0-3 at the interval. Aidan
Elliott was called into action early and brought off a couple of brilliant saves
which steadied the back line Jimmy Fay Myles McEntee Oliver Galligan and Dominic
Sheridan were all outstanding in defence and dealt capably with the Saint Mary’s
attack. PJ Carroll and JJ Reilly at midfield laid the foundation for this great
win and ensured that the forwards had ample opportunities to build a winning
lead. Undoubtedly the Man of the Match was 35 year Phil Lightning Murray whose
speed accuracy and link play was the outstanding feature of the Final. The Gaels
forwards only shot 7 wides in the entire hour despite leading comfortably
throughout. Pat McNamara had his best game ever for the Gaels and is a certainty
for the Cavan team’s forthcoming NFL campaign Charlie Donohoe was always
dangerous and his brilliant goal settled the Gaels and set sail for an historic
victory emulating the feat of his father Charlie who won Senior Championship
medals with Cavan Slashers in 1917 and 1922.Haulie Reilly Noel Smith and Captain
Dermot Dalton all made valuable contributions to an outstanding team victory.

Cavan Gaels win their 4th Senior
Championship beating Ballyhaise 1-10 to 0-6 points in a bitterly disappointing
game before a small crowd of 3,500 who paid almost £3,500 receipts in perfect
sunny conditions at Breffni Park. Francis Goodman scored the decisive goal with
3 minutes left of the 1st half.. Much was expected of the Ballyhaise outfit with
such big names as Enda McGowan Hughie Newman Hubert Conaty Barry Tierney and
the mercurial Steve Duggan. They appeared overcome by nerves and Goodman’s solo
strike just before the interval when they had closed the gap to just two points
was a body blow to Ballyhaise from which they never recovered. Instead of a
contest in the second half the game descended into a scrappy free ridden affair
with Ballyhaise never again getting within striking distance of the Gaels.36
year old Phil Lightning Murray with his speed strength and link play was the Man
of the Match with John Cullen at corner forward a revelation in his first Senior
County Final start The Gaels played with their customary assurance poise and
fitness Aidan Elliott mopped up the little he had to do behind a rock solid
defence where Eugene Reilly Jimmy Fay Myles McEntee were sound throughout. Star
of the defence was undoubtedly Paddy Reilly who put the shackles on Steve Duggan
and never allowed him the space to punish the Gaels with his darting runs and
customary deadly finish. Joe Mullery and Oliver Galligan played their customary
sound game with Galligan venturing forward frequently to assist the Gaels
attack.JJ Reilly and Francis Goodman lorded it at mid field and laid the
foundation for another Gaels title with their clever distribution to an
excellent forward division. Phil Murray used his football brain and experience
to telling effect with John Cullen playing a stormier in the right corner
forward position. Pat McNamara Charlie Donohoe following in the footsteps of his
father winner with the Slashers in 1917 and 1922 Haulie Reilly Captain and
Dermot Dalton all played a vital role in securing for the Gaels their 4th County
Senior Championship Scorers for the Gaels John Cullen 0-4,Francis Goodman
1-0,Haulie Reilly 0-2 and Pat McNamara and Charlie Donohoe 0-1 each. Ballyhaise
Steve Duggan 0-2,Hughie Newman and Barry Tierney 0-2.There were 4 Reilly
brothers from Ashe Street on the wining team with another Noel listed as a sub
while John Cullen and Myles McEntee are brothers in law. Gaels Aidan Elliott,
Eugene Reilly, Jimmy Fay, Myles McEntee, Oliver Galligan, Paddy Reilly ,Joe
Mullery, JJ Reilly Francis Goodman, Pat McNamara,Haulie Reilly (Captain),
Charlie Donohoe, John Cullen, Dermot Dalton and Phil Murray. Sub Louis Blessing
for Joe Mullery. Referee Micheal Greenan Drumalee. PC Donohoe Chairman of the
County Board presented the Saint Oliver Plunkett Cup to Gaels captain Haulie
Reilly with a bitterly disappointed dispirited but sporting Ballyhaise captain
Hubert Conaty also in the picture. Gaels later celebrate in style, the Saint
Oliver Plunkett Cup is brought by Haulie Reilly to Killygarry School for the
very 1st time and all the pupils partake of refreshments while later in the week
all the Saint Felim’s Boys school are treated and finally patients in Saint
Felim’s Hospital enjoy a gala night with the Champions.
Curtain raiser Cavan Gaels captained by Brian O Grady overwhelm a very young Bailieboro team 16 points to 0-4.Bailieboro had no answer to the Gaels high quality speed, fitness and skill. The Gaels led by 0-7 to 0-2 at the interval. The midfield of Brian O Grady and the towering Michael McNally dominated the game and ensured that the Gaels won the Minor Championship for the 1st time since 1968.Scorers Brian O Grady 0-6,Eamonn Brady, Declan Reilly 0-3 each, Michael McNally, Terry McGovern,Finbar Donohoe and David Smith 0-1 each. October 4th 2001 Cavan Gaels record their glorious 5th Senior Championship win when they easily account for the Champions Gowna going for 3 in a row 0-15 to 1-7 at wind swept Breffni Park before an attendance of 5,000 people. Great personal triumph for Joe O Connor and his selectors JJ O Reilly and Packy Kiernan in bridging the 23 year gap to their last triumph in 1978.Among the attendance were the first officers of Cavan Gaels Jimmy Inky Sheridan and Sean Galligan who were joint Secretaries in 1957 and the peerless Paddy Conaty who was the Gaels first Vice Chairman and is presently President of the Club. Phil Lightning Murray Danny Thomas PJ Carroll Gabriel Kelly Jim McDonnell Cathal Young Paddy Tavey Tommy Monaghan Tony Looney now domiciled in Shannon and Dermot Burke who travelled from London. They will now play the Donegal champions Saint Eunan's in the 1st round of the Ulster Club Championship. Their previous triumphs were in 1965 1975 1977 and 1978.Gowna failed to penetrate the brilliant Cavan Gaels defence where Owen Elliott Shane McGlade Fergal Brady Karl Crotty Eamonn Reilly James Doonan held the Gowna attack in a vice like grip and Darren Rabbitt curtailed the effectiveness of Gowna danger man Dermot McCabe. Man of the Match Cathal Collins lorded it at midfield with very able assistance from the youthful Enda King. The Gaels aided by the gale force breeze led by 0-8 to 0-3 at the interval and to compound matters for Gowna the wind dropped to a breeze in the second half. The Gaels played with a double centre forward with Michael Graham and Donal Buggy spearheading the attack. Dermot McCabe scored a brilliant Gowna goal just 30 seconds after the restart. followed by a point soon afterwards to leave the minimum between the two sides. Eamonn Reilly Niall Collins Mickey Graham Gavin Duffy and Paul O Donnell quickly replied for the Gaels to stretch their lead 0-14 to 1-5 with only 9 minutes remaining. The foundation for victory was laid at centre field where the brilliant Cathal Collins was ably assisted by the youthful Enda King supplying a plentiful supply to a fast skilful forward line where Niall Collins Mickey Graham Paul O Donnell Gavin Duffy were ably assisted by Donal Buggy and subs Mark Leddy and Dominic Reilly. Ode to Young McGlade
Come sit down
and listen to me young McGlade
I sat in the Stand and watched you how you played
If we met on the street sure we’d not know each other
And yet, young
Shane, you are my brother.
I could light up your day with many good tales
Of the family we belong to, the great Cavan Gaels
Of men who played back to the year ‘58
And who watched you young Gaels leave Gowna prostrate.
Was your
friend Darren ware as he soared so high
That cheering him on was Tavey Thomas and Tighe
Did Eoin Elliott know as he saved that bender
It was Foley O Rourke that was shouting “Aha no surrender”!
When Fergal Brady caught that great ball at the post
I’m telling you Shane I did see a ghost
He was smiling at Fergal his lips said “well done”!
Then he just disappeared saying “That’s my grandson”!
Darting Doonan
and Crotty just drove Gowna silly
That wasn’t thunder you heard it was “Polo Grounds Willy”
As he looked
down on James and that player so wily
Centre half supreme the dynamo Reilly
In that stormy
second half as the Gowna men hit
Yu were watched by Galligan Keoghan and Terry Smith
Men who had travelled from places afar
To see a display that was without par.
When we took
control in the middle you must have heard our cheers ring
At the royal performance of the one who is king
Cathal beside him on excellence bordered
Definitely just…. what the doctor ordered
Tell me now young McGlade did your forwards find it frightening ?
To be watched by such stalwarts as ‘Inky’and’Lightning’
Sitting there also was that hero unsung
A Gaels man to the core the veteran called Young.
You will agree
young McGlade that your forwards did well again
As the Champs tried to cope with Duffy and Neligan
O Donnell Leddy and Buddy turned on the style
With an A Level performance from sharp shooting Niall
Mickey Graham that piece of human elastic
On the day, was simply Captain Fantastic
It had to be agreed by all high and low
It was a glorious achievement for J J and Joe.
Ready to race
in and up on their toe
Was Reilly McCormick two Smiths and two Crowes
There was two extra Grahams Jonathan and Pat
Poor Gowna might s well have thrown in the hat
There were many old gaels there,Shane, let me say
Kelly Looney McVeety J P and Fay
Noel Smith Dominick Sheridan and by hook or by crook
All the way from Lovely Leitrim Fr.Mickey Cooke.
You didn’t see
him young McGlade but with every Gaels score
A Cheshire grin appeared o the face of Maurice Hoare
Nor did you know the cause of that terrible flurry
It was the arrival of the Queen, The bould Bridgie Murray
Patrick Kiernan was smiling although he’d lost out
He looked like a man who had never been in doubt
That you young
McGlade and all of the rest
On the 30th September would be “simply the best”
At the final
whistle Paddy Conaty looked up o heaven
Remembering how it started way back in ‘57
I’d swear he saw Maurice and Eugene look down
And bespectacled Gilroy with his everlasting frown
So now young McGlade if we ever do meet
In the pub or the Park or just on the street
We’ll sit down and talk and exchange a few tales
Like two brothers who belong to ….the great “Cavan Gaels”
1st port of call for the new Cavan senior champions Cavan Gaels with the Saint Oliver Plunkett trophy is to legendary member of Cavan Gaels’ Finance Committee Brigid Murray Billis who is joined by her son Paddy granddaughters Aoife and Sorcha and JJ Reilly in saluting the new champions.

September 25th 2003 Cavan Gaels captained by James Doonan coached by former Monaghan great Gerry McCarville beat Mullahoran 3-6 to 1-8 to win their 6th Senior Championship in windy and dull Breffni Park before an attendance of 4,000.The difference between the two teams was the Gaels ability to turn acute defence into scoring goals on the break with Michael Graham scoring after 2 minutes and 30 seconds of the 1st half and Cathal Collins converting a penalty after a foot block mid way through the second half . Anthony Forde scored the decisive goal 5 minutes from the end after a long ball from Gavin Duffy found Michael Graham who transferred to Forde. to put the game beyond Mullahoran’s each. Enda King’s point in the 61st minute was the icing on the cake and ensured that the Gaels were Champions for the sixth time. Mullahotran led by1-6 to 1-4 t after 40 minutes but the Gaels were the dominant force in the second half. Their youth combination and ability to take scores in the difficult weather conditions was the difference between two well matched sides who were level with 10 minutes remaining. Team performance by the Gaels from Eoin Elliott to Paul O Donnell at top of the left their team work and understanding built up in the last 9 months under team Manager Gerry McCarville and Selectors Charlie Donohoe Aidan Watters. Eoin Elliott’s long kick outs were a feature and he was soundness personified. Pauric Smith at left full back was given a free role and helped out in defence centre field and in attack. Karl Crotty was outstanding with great support from Shane Mc Glade Gavin Duffy Fergal Brady Cathal Collins and Eamonn Reilly. James Doonan and Enda King gradually gained control at centre field and finished well on top supplying their forwards with a match winning supply where Man of the Match Michael Graham Anthony Forde Niall Collins and Paul O Donnell were ably supported by Tommy McCormick Michael Lyng and Dominic Reilly Fine sporting hard game all through with a fracas occurring following the Gaels introduction of Sean Reilly when Padraig Brady and Ciaran Brady got involved in a nasty row with Sean Reilly and all three were sent to the line as the full time whistle was sounded. Scorers for the Gaels Michael Graham and Anthony Forde 1-1 each Cathal Collins 1-0 Paul O Donnell 0-2 and Enda King and Michael Lyng 0-1 each. October 7th 2004 Gaels blow away Mullahoran 1-9 to 0-7 in hard fought county Senior Final at wind and rain swept Breffni Park before a crowd of 2,500 who paid gate receipts of €2,097.The underfoot conditions were not helped by the fact that the All Ireland Minor and All Ireland Under 21 Finals were played on the same surface jut 24 hours before the game. Cavan Gaels included 10 of the present County Senior panel on their team. After Saint Patrick’s Brass and Reed Band Bunnoe paraded the teams and played the National Anthem. Mullahoran won the toss and elected to play with the strong breeze in the 1st half dominating possession they were rocked by the Gaels’ blistering start when Mickey Graham pointed after 2 minutes Anthony Forde after 4 minutes and Mickey Graham and Mickey Graham again after 7 minutes before he was booked for a high challenge on Thomas Nannery. Michael Lyng pointed a free after Paul O Donnell was fouled after 20 minutes to close the Gaels’ account in the 1st half. Mullahoran fared little better with the aid of the strong wind and while dominating play could not convert their superiority into scores with only Danny Brady and Eddie Reilly converting their chances to leave the half time score 0-4 each. The Gaels reshuffled their team at the interval and Dominic Reilly replaced Nicholas Walsh. Cormac Neligan converted a free to put the Gaels in the lead 5-4 immediately equalised from a free by Danny Brady after Referee Joe McQuillan spotted a late tackle. Michael Graham continued his strong running and probing in the Gaels attack and Michael Lyng converted 2 frees created by Graham in the 10th and 13th minute to push the Gaels7-5 ahead. A Point by Danny Brady brought the sides back to 7-6.Great movement between Cathal Collins Anthony Forde and Mickey Graham ended with the latter pointing with 10 minutes left. Eddie Reilly pointed for Mullahoran to leave just 1 point between the sides with 7 minutes left. The pendulum once again swung Mullahoran’s way and Ciaran Reilly got clean through but rushed his shot which was brilliantly saved by Eoin Elliott for a 45.Then came the decisive moment of the game after the resultant kick out came to Michael Lyng who combined brilliantly with Paul O Donnell who sent a beautiful pass to Michael Graham who slammed the ball to the net with only 5 minutes left. Cathal Collins fetched the kick out and scored the insurance point which left the Gaels leading by 5 points with only 3 minutes remaining. Mullahoran laid siege to the Gael’s goal but a resolute defence held firm as Danny Brady and Eddie Reilly in turn had goal chances saved and cleared . Graham with his best display since 1997 broke the back of the Mullahoran defence with his speed strength and determination putting the issue beyond doubt with a solo goal 5 minutes from the end. The two sides were tied at 4 points each at the interval and Mullahoran looked the more likely to wrest the crown until the Gaels’ late flourish. Michael Graham was a very popular deserving Man of the Match to cap a great season as he earlier steered Butlersbridge to Junior Championship honours. Scorers for the Gaels Mickey Graham 1-2 Michael Lyng 0-3 Anthony Forde 0-2 Cathal Collins and Cormac Nelligan 0-1 each.Mullahoran Danny Brady Eddie Reilly The Gaels will now play surprise Monaghan champions Magheracloone Mitchell’s in the 1st round of the Ulster Club Championship in Breffni Park. Coached by Michael Flynn who despite the Gaels not playing as well as expected thought a draw a fair result and he was looking forward to much better display in the Replay while Michael Graham Senior Chairman of Minor Board said “the conditions did not suit the Gaels. October
13th 2005 Cavan Gaels
completed the three in a row when they accounted for a teak tough Mullahoran
0-12 to 1-06 in the County Senior Final before 4,000 spectators in Breffni Park
in very blustery conditions. Mullahoran after playing with the strong wind led
by only 1-2 to 0-3 at half time (the goal coming courtesy of a penalty from
Danny Brady on 18 minutes) after missing a bagful of scoring opportunities.
Mullahoran only scored one more point courtesy of Eddie Reilly. Hungrier fitter
and faster to the ball Cavan Gaels are the first team since Kingscourt 1988-1991
and Laragh United 1982-1984 to complete the treble. Mullahoran led by 1-05 to
0-7 after 13 minutes of the 2nd half then came the inspirational point from
Michael Graham in the 44th and the lead point from Enda King 2 minutes later and
the town team were on their way to the elusive treble. Gavin Duffy had a point
for the Gaels in the 49th minute to leave the score 0-10 to 1-5 in favour of the
Gaels. The Gaels in their haste to close out the game had a number of wides
before Eddie Reilly had the point of the match with 7 minutes remaining to leave
just 1 point between the sides. Thomas Nannery right half back was through on
the Gaels’ goal in the 58th minute but elected to shoot for a goal when a point
would have levelled the game. From the kick out the Gaels engineered a quick
counter attack which Seanie Johnston converted for a point on 59 minutes and
Seanie Johnston completed the scoring with a masterful point in injury time to
give the Gaels a 3 point victory and the elusive 3 in a row.. Scorers for the

brought off a number of great saves clearances and kick outs. The defence
limited Mullahoran to 2 points from play from Danny Brady and Eddie Reilly. The
midfield came more and more into the game in the second half and dominated the
closing stages. The attack were a cohesive unit moving as one with Michael Lyng

Duffy the Dazzler
In Kingspan
Breffni Park, on a gale force laden day
The Gaels and The Dreadnoughts again entered the fray
Would might Mullahoran third time lucky be
Or would the Champions be victorious in a row of three
Not one change from the programme for Mullahoran would there be
The Townies
minus Rabbitt should be taken easily
No doubt about it, the full back would be missed
We hoped for no additions to that injury list
The team
selections were announced, the Gaels
Down two more
Crotty the defender O Donell sure to score
The Dreadnoughts smelled blood, victory they could see
The Townies were in trouble they can’t afford to lose three.
Big J J in the stand was proudly heard to say,
“We have a great panel with other players to play”
How right he was as Neligan got straight away stuck in
Dominic and Niall came on and also did their thing.
Fit and
Lean each team looked, none appearing puffy
The Gaels came
bouncing on the field at
Centre –back young Duffy
Justice had been done, he had always been on the team
And as he charged onto the pitch he looked so very keen
How wise it
was to unbench him on that September day,
He became the star attraction with a wonderful display
Of passing, catching, kicking and canny judgement making
His running surges up the field to join in the score taking
I watched his
parents leave the stand to handshakes shouts and pats
The couldn’t hide their feelings as they smiled like Cheshire cats
But like us all their pride was not just about their son
They were happy for a gallant team that achieved the three in one
But plaudits to the men on the field that showed such steady nerves
A goalkeeper
must be fearless, a man and not a mouse
Eoghan ‘Givens’ Elliott was ‘as safe as the proverbial house’.
The battle of
the O Reillys was watched with anticipation
Punching Eddie punched the… ground…. with frequent bouts of frustration.
There is no doubt that Eddie is one of the Dreadnoughts finest
But Chest, Gearóid and “Young McGlade” had the number 14 minus-ed
Crotty and ‘Gunner’ never got to tussle
That injury
list had lengthened when Karl pulled a muscle
Smith Duffy and ‘St.Anthony’ Forde tigerishly tackled
The extra gunners and Ciaran Reilly were well and truly shackled.
While out in
the midfield the King was ruling royally
Cathal his companion continuously served him loyally
And how we sighed and felt so very disappointed
For the injured Paul O Donnell who’d surely have three pointed.
Downes gave
his very all ,he is only twenty one
You ‘re a star of the future Kevin, so to you I say” well done”
The twisting turning Michael Lyng like a fleeting bird he flew
We gazed in admiration on the new “rhapsody in blue”
They huffed,
they puffed and they shouted all the louder
But they just could not blow out the “Johnston Baby Powder”
He jumped so high into the sky that it all seemed so ridiculous
For any back to try to out jump our own ex- Ozzie..Nicholas.
As the years
go by in each final he seems to get much faster
And once again he left them for dead, masterful “Mickey the Master”
Too shrewd too
clever too experienced for each oncoming tackle
Mickey was just as elusive as that Frenchman called “the Jackal”
So McCarville the magnificent has repeated the story
With Joe Jimmy and Charlie they have brought our town great glory
A first three in a row has come to the Gaels of Cavan
But this year I salute the Dazzler Duffy…….
Congratulations Gavin !

Gaels win their 9th Senior Football Championship in their 50th Jubilee Year when
they comprehensively beat Gowna 0-15 to 0-11 before 5,000 spectators who paid
gate receipts of €41,000 on a perfect sunny day for football. Gowna who last won
the title in 1998 were unlucky to lose their star man Dermot McCabe with a
recurrence of an old injury after 15minutes but made great use of their limited
resources. It was the first time that the Gaels had overcome Gowna in the Final
after being beaten on the 3 previous occasions. After Saint Patrick’s Brass and
Reed Band paraded the teams and played the National Anthem the Gaels started at
a frenzied pace to lead by 0-4 to 0-0 after 8 minutes before Pierson opened the
Gowna account after 10 minutes with a point. The Gaels led by 0-5 to 0-1 after
the first quarter then came the injury to Dermot McCabe who was replaced by
Shane Brady Leading by 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval the Gaels capacity to turn
defence into attack at blistering pace was decisive. The Gaels started the
second half with a great point from left half back Paraic Smith quickly followed
by points from Paul O Donnell and Kevin Downes. Then the Gaels drafted in Sean
Higgins for Mickey Graham and Shane McGlade was delegated to mark Pierson. The
strong experienced Ciaran Brady was drafted on the Gowna team and immediately
made a difference reducing the arrears to 3 points after 6 minutes then Sean
Higgins struck for 2 great points followed by another point from Seanie Johnston
to give the Gaels a 5 point lead with 10 minutes gone of the second half then
Gowna had their best spell of the game taking over with points from Mark
McKeever Shane Briody and Gerard Pierson to reduce the deficit to 2 points 0-12
to 0-10.Gowna threw away their chances to draw level with 3 consecutive wides as
they overran the Gaels in this period. Then Seanie Johnston struck for 2
unanswered points from frees followed by a wonderful point from Paul O Donnell
to finish the Gaels’ scoring. Eamonn Reilly Captain was outstanding for the
Gaels at centre half back with great support from Enda King at centre field
Seanie Johnston was outstanding in attack and had excellent support from Paul O
Donnell with Kevin Downes prominent in the 1st half .On this form
they will be hard to beat in the Ulster Senior Championship where they now meet
Letterkenny in the 1st Round at Breffni Park. Scorers for the Gaels Sean
Johnston 0-7 Sean Higgins Pauric Smith Kevin Downes Paul O Donnell 0-2 each and
Michael Lyng 0-1 ,Gowna Gerard Pierson 0-6 Mark McKeever 0-2 Niall Madden Shane

Cormac Neligan for Kevin Downes Dominic Reilly for Paul O Donnell. Popular Man
of the Match was Gowna’s Gerard Pierson who scored 0-6 points of their total and
was involved in all their outstanding forward play. Team Manager Malachy O
Rourke said that the Gaels were superior in key positions and their support play
and accuracy were the keys to success. While Eamonn Reilly Captain pictured with
Paddy Conaty founder and President of the Club on the Golden Jubilee of The
Gaels said that they had been stung by last year’s loss to Mullahoran and
trained on over 90 evenings for the Championship. We did everything required of
us and we are looking forward to a good run in the Ulster Senior Club
Championship. Referee Jimmy Galligan Lacken
In the curtain raiser Cavan Gaels won their 9th title in 10 years when they annihilated Lurgan 5-15 to 1-05.Dominating the game from start to finish they got off to dream start and led by 2-4 to 0-1 after 12 minutes and 3-9 to 0-2 at the interval. They stretched their lead to 4-12 0-5 after 15 minutes of the second half to finish well on top of a dispirited Lurgan who were never in the match with a chance of competing after missing a first half penalty Playing in their 9th Final in 10 years. This was reckoned by seasoned punters to be Cavan Gaels’ best ever Minor Final display and augurs well for the future of the Town side. Scorers for the Gaels Martin Dunne 3-6 Kevin Meehan and Conor McClarey 1-2 each Niall Smith 0-2 and Christopher Quinn Liam Cooke and Niall Murray 0-1 each Team Michael Coyle Patrick Heslin Niall Gurhy Damien Kellegher Christy Quinn Captain Marc Leddy Liam Cooke Daniel Graham Declan Meehan Niall Smith Niall Murray Kevin Meehan Conor McClarey Martin Dunne Robert Maloney Derham. Fifty Years
“Young
McGlade” and “Saint Anthony” I have put you on parade
”The Master” and “The Dazzler” what contributions they made
I am glad they had their days in the sun
Now on our 50th Birthday who will be the one ?
Elliott was
awesome and kept the slate clean
His long kicks out were a sight to be seen
Rabbitt was rapid,McGlade always ready
The Doc at full back was stalwart and steady
Gavin gave his
all and surely did his bit
What a whole-hearted performance from gutsy Padraic Smith
And how we cheered and called for more
When high -catching Nicholas did majestically soar
Another great
display from his highness the King
How wonderful to watch fleet –footed Lyng
Anthony’s energy knows n bounds
As he linked up with midfield and young Kevin Downes
It’s amazing
to see that still few are faster
Than the prompter supreme “Mickey The Master”
Shuffling Seanie Johnston jinked this way and that
And left the Gowna back line totally flat
Hard working O
Donnell always gives his best
A real team-player that combines with the rest
Strength in depth options Malachy had tons
With Dominic ,Cormac and Sean he fired his big guns
But my man of
the match who gave of his best
Was Captain Fantastic the man with the chest
A leader, a feeder an attacker ,a retriever
He came out with flying colours when put to the test
I watched as
he spoke with obvious animation
Body language displaying grim determination
He pulled at his jersey and seemed to say aloud
”Come on lads we’re fifty, let’s do the Club proud”
O Gowna you
tried hard and it’s only fair to say
It was sad to see Dermot leave the field of play
Nop doubt you’ll be back to try to pull down our sails
And renew old rivalries with the Cavan town Gaels
And what of
our Minors who gave such a display
Achieving “the double” on that “Paddy’s Day”
Paddy Conaty stood there with each cup at his side
Looked down at the crowd with a smile full of pride.
The subs, the
coaches the ladies who made tea
The committees the supporters who brought this to be
Eugene and Tommy, Maurice and John Fee
Were you looking down from the heavens at what your club had come to be.

October 14th 2008 Cavan Gaels easily overcome Denn 0-15 to 0-7 in the Senior County Final at Breffni Park. The Gaels had too much quality all over the field and their forwards ruthlessly punished Denn (appearing in their 1st Final since 1910) at every opportunity. Their pace and support play were much too good for a Denn team who seemed to be overcome with pre match nerves missing out on the team photograph before the match in their eagerness to get on with the game. The Gaels playing in their 9th consecutive Senior Final had too much guile and flair for neighbouring Denn who performed admirably particularly against the wind in the second half but shot 10 wides-6 in 1st half .Seanie Johnston Man of the Match shooting 7 points from 8 attempts. Excellent support from Nicholas Walsh and Michael Lyng Great performances from Sean Reilly Daniel; Graham Sean Reilly Dominick Reilly all making their Senior Final debut while the Gaels introduced Niall Murray and Robert Maloney Derham who had earlier starred for the Gaels Minors in the curtain raiser. After Saint Patrick’s Brass and Reed Band Bunnoe paraded the teams a minutes silence was observed in memory of Paddy Conaty President Cavan Gaels who died during the year. Denn won the toss and elected to play with the strong wind in the first half. Colin Kiernan opened the scoring for Denn with a great point after 15 seconds but Johnston replied for the Gaels with 2 points in the 1st 12 minutes. Then Eamonn Reilly who was having a great game at centre half set up brother Dominic and Enda King for two great scores in the 12th and 13th minute before Michael Lyng made it 6-1 to the Gaels’ after 15 minutes. Ronan Kiernan out fielded Darren Rabbitt to shoot the best score of the Final from 35 metres for Denn. There followed a period of Denn dominance where thy missed several scorable opportunities before Johnston had another point from a free to leave the half time score 0-7 to 0-2.The Gaels opened brightly in the 2nd half playing with the wind and Anthony Forde had a point on 2 minutes followed by a close range free converted by Johnston. Martin Cahill stormed up field on a promising Denn attack on 36 minutes which ended in a wide their 9th to the Gaels’ 1 at this stage. Colin Kiernan was back with appoint from a free to leave it 0-9 to 0-3.Great Dominic Reilly point after great movement with Eamonn Reilly Sean Reilly Daniel Graham and Johnston was back in after he intercepted a poor pass out of defence to make the score 11-3 with still 20 minutes to go. Eamonn Reilly playing a great game then set up Johnston for a superb point followed by beautiful struck point from a free 50 metres out by Cormac Neligan. Colin Kiernan on 55 minutes and Hubert Smith on 56 minute had consolation points for Denn before Martin Dunne took a sharp turn and slotted over a beautiful point for the Gaels. Colin Kiernan slotted over Denn’s last point of the game before Micheal Lyng showing flashes of his old brilliant form finished the scoring for the Gels’ with a well taken point.’ Scorers for the Gaels Sean Johnston 0-7 Michael Lyng and Dominick Reilly 0-2 each Cormac Neligan Martin Dunne Enda King and Anthony Forde 0-1 each. Team Eoghan Elliott John Gurhy Darren Rabbitt Karl Crotty Anthony Forde Eamonn Reilly Captain Daniel Graham Enda King Cathal Collins Sean Reilly Sean Johnston Cormac Neligan Michael Lyng Nicholas Walsh and Dominick Reilly Subs Martin Dunne Robert Maloney Derham Kevin Meehan Niall Murray. The Gaels are the team of the Championship winning al their 4 matches by an average of 8 points each. They have talent in abundance as witnessed in the Minor Final and their second successive Minor/Senior double and have an outstanding under age structure. Eamonn Reilly Captain of the Gaels salutes their late President and founder member of the Club Paddy Conaty who was laid to rest during the week and looks forward to their opening Ulster Club Championship clash with old rivals Saint Galls of Belfast who will get a better fight this year than last when the Gaels failed to the Belfast Club. We are bigger stronger fitter and hungrier than the last time and our aim now is to get a good run in the Ulster Club Championship. He pays tribute to JJ and Paddy Reilly Finian Farrell Michael Flynn and the late John Fee for the under age structures within the Club and calls on the players and supporters to enjoy days like this as they don’t last forever!.
In the Minor decider Cavan Gaels beat Saint Joseph’s (Killeshandra/Arva) 2-17 to 3-7 with a Man of the Match performance by team captain Niall Murray who accounted for 0-8 of their tally in their 10th Minor Championship win in 11 years. The Gaels led by 1-13 to 1-2 at the interval after Saint Joseph’s won the toss and to everybody’s amazement elected to play against the stiff breeze. Saint Joseph’s to their credit fought back in the 2nd half and closed the lead down to 0-6 points. The clinching goal came from sub Paul O Connor after great work along the end line from Niall Murray who laid it off to O Connor to smash to the net. In celebrating his goal O Connor incurred the wrath of the referee and was given a straight red card. Scorers for the Gaels Niall Murray 0-8 Conor McClarey 1-4 Niall Smith 0-3 Paul O Connor 1-0 Robert Maloney Derham Brian Grogan 0-1 each.Team Michael Coyle Darragh Sexton Marc Leddy Fergal Blessing Kevin Meehan Damian Kellegher Paul McKiernan Robert Maloney Derham Ryan Johnston John Farrelly Niall Murray Brian Grogan Cian O Donoghue Conor McClarey Niall Smith. Subs Morgan Young Paul O Connor.JJ Reilly Manager said it was a very satisfying win in this their 11th consecutive appearance in the Minor decider and their 10th win in 11 years. Saint Joseph’s simply played into their hands by electing to play against the wind in the first half after winning the toss. A good tough hard game well contested by Saint Joseph’s. Niall Murray Captain Man of the Match and later a sub on the winning Senior team dedicated his own superb performance and the team’s outstanding triumph to the memory of John Fee their Under Age Manager who passed away some few years ago and Paddy Conaty Founder and President of the Club who passed away during the week
Same Week Shane McGowan formerly of the Pogue’s and Sharon Shannon are appearing at the Pumpkin Festival in Virginia.

Cavan Gaels defeat plucky but disappointing Denn by 1-20 to 2-11 in a one sided
Senior County Final played in ideal weather conditions before an attendance of
3,500 who paid gate receipts of €41,500.Masterful performance by Michéal Lyng
who was only drafted into the Gaels side as a last minute replacement when
Captain Anthony Forde was moved to midfield created by the late defection of
Nicholas Walsh through injury .Michael Lyng took Forde’s place in the forward
line. Great return for the Kilnavara man after 4 seasons struggling with serious
injury and illness which not only threatened his career at one stage but put his
young life in jeopardy .Paul Fitzpatrick covering his first Senior Final as
Sports Editor of the Anglo Celt sums it up perfectly when he remarks “form is
temporary class is permanent”! The game was won and lost in the first quarter
with Denn showing big match nerves never getting to grips with the Gaels forward
line where Seanie Johnston and Cormac Nelligan were the main scorers but each
one of them threatened danger when in procession. The Gaels led by 1-9 to 0-2
after 23 minutes of the 1st half after getting the start that Denn
needed to make any impressions on the Champions who were completing their hat
trick of titles. On 23 minutes Eamonn Reilly who was having a ‘stormer’ at
centre half fielded and laid off to Michéal Lyng who skipped a couple of Denn
tackles shooting past the hapless Brian Boylan to the roof of the Denn net..It
was expected that Denn would emerge from the dressing rooms with fire in their
bellies for the 2nd half but it was the Gaels who showed the greater
skill exuberance and hunger for the fray in the early period of the second half
pushing their lead out to 1-16 to 0-6 lead. The Gaels sat back on their laurels
and then we saw a totally different performance from Denn who with the aid of a
penalty closed the gap to 6 points with only 9 ½ minutes to play but a point
from Cormac Nelligan from a free and sub Padraig Smith’s fisted point put
daylight between the sides and sent the Gaels to their 11th senior
crown .Seanie Johnston sent over a further point before sub Kevin Meehan closed
the their account scoring with a superb point for the Gaels leaving them 1-20
to 1-11 ahead before sub John Smith deflected a shot by brother Hubert past
Eoghan Elliott in the Gaels’ goal..The final score hardly does justice to the
Gaels’ superiority but Denn lost any hope of springing a surprise by their poor
opening quarter performance. The Gaels were superb in every position from Eoghan
Elliott in goal to Martin Dunne at top of the left. The backbone of the team
down the middle Darren Rabbitt Eamonn Reilly Cathal Collins Captain Fantastic
Anthony Forde Michéal Lyng and Cormac Nelligan laid the foundation for this
historic win. Very muted celebrations the Gaels are now thirsting for revenge on
their Belfast rivals Saint Galls of Belfast. Mick O Dowd Manager said” the Gaels
played ominously well and were moving into top gear for their Ulster Club
Championship game against Saint Galls in 2 weeks time in Breffni Park”. Referee
Joe McQuillan Kill Shamrocks had no major problems controlling the game and did
not interfere with the flow of the play allowing the advantage rule. Scorers for

entertained the crowd during the interval when the Jubilee team of Laragh United
were introduced to the crowd. In the curtain raiser Killann Gaels (Bailieborough
/Shercock) beat Ballyhaise 1-9 to 1-6 in a dull listless final where the
favourites Ballyhaise were overcome by nerves and never hit the -form that won
them the League earlier in the year Both sides were guilty of some very poor
shooting.

October 2nd 2011 A crowd in excess of 3,500 saw Cavan Gaels win their 12th Senior Football title beating challengers Castlerahan 4-11 to 0-7 at dull misty overcast but dry Breffni Park with the sod wet and the ball slippery both teams lined out for the elements. Castlerahan captain Ronan Flanagan in Maroon and White won the toss and elected to play into the Town goals. Saint Mary’s Brass Band from Kingscourt led the parade with a colour party displaying the colours of the two teams with the rival supporters cheering their favourites all the way as Castlerahan bid for their first title since the heady days of Tony Tighe and Mick Higgins in 1945 while the Gaels were seeking their 8th crown in 12 year appearing in their 12th consecutive Senior County Final.
From the thrown in by Referee Brendan Sweeney from Ballymachugh it was obvious that the challengers were nervous and would take some time to settle into their rhythm while the Gaels were driven by their intent on redemption, following their abject failure to Kingscourt in the 2010 decider. In their first attack of the afternoon Man of the Match Kevin Meehan ran on to a pin point pass from Martin Dunne to blast the ball to the Castlerahan net with only 2 ½ minutes played. Cian Mackey was quickly back for Castlerahan with a well struck point. On 5 minutes the outstanding Sean Brady sent in a long distance free which found Oisin O Connell through on the Cavan Gaels goal but Eoghan Elliott narrowed the angle and made a superb save to deny the goal they craved. After a period of sorting out the ball quickly transferred to Micheal Lyng in the 14th minute who deftly stroked over the Gaels first point making it 1-1 to Nil. After Eoghan Elliott had once again thwarted a great effort from Brian Coleman for Castlerahan quickly clearing to Enda King who along with his partner Dominick Reilly established a foothold at centre field which they never surrendered. Michael Lyng secured from a clever free by Sean Johnston laid a perfect ball on for Martin Dunne who sent over the Gael’s second point with 16 minutes of the first half played. Enda King got through on goal but his shot for a goal hit the upright while Martin Dunne was back in action but his shot for a long range point fell into the arms Jamie Leahy in the Castlerahan goals who cleared the danger. Robert Maloney Derham who was having a ‘stormer’ at wing back for the Gael’s joined the attack and sent over a beautiful well struck point in the 26th minute. Then the same player linking up with Kevin Meehan who found Martin Dunne running in on goal and the Farnham youngster almost tore the roof of the net with Cavan Gael’s second goal making the score 2-3 to 0-2.Oisin O Connell replied with a well struck free for Castlerahan before the Gael’s had the last three points of the first half through Sean Johnstone 1 a free and Niall Smith leaving the half time score Cavan Gaels 2-6 Castlerahan 0-3. Castlerahan to their credit came out in the second half all guns blazing but their only reward was a point well struck by Paul Smith and a booming 45 metre free from Sean Brady that went straight over the black spot at the Rosculligan end of the pitch. In between Micheal Lyng gained possession and sent over a well struck point for the Gaels. Then in the 40th minute the Gaels ensured that the Oliver Plunkett Cup would once again reside in Cavan town when the ever alert Kevin Meehan intercepted a Castlerahan side line kick to solo trough the Castlerahan defence before parting to the lurking Sean Johnston who never gave Jamie Leahy a chance of saving a well struck shot to the Castlerahan net for the Gaels’ 3rd goal and give the Gaels’ a 3-8 to 0-5 lead with 20 minutes still left on the clock . A beautiful solo point by Oisin O Connell was quickly cancelled out by Martin Dunne who after receiving from Enda King curled over a beautiful struck point from an acute angle. After great work by Dominic O Reilly and Enda King Robert Maloney Derham took a pin point pass from Niall Smith and his speed and strength took him past the stationary Castlerahan defence to score the Gaels 4th goal giving Jamie Leahy no chance from close range. The Gaels used the last 15 minutes to empty their bench and Martin Dunne scored 2 more points with Sean Brady brilliantly converting a 47 metre free for Castlerahan to leave the final score Cavan Gaels 4-11 Castlerahan 0-7.Cavan Gaels were winning their 12th title and 21st Senior crown to come to the town since Cavan Slashers won their first Senior title in 1892. Tom O Reilly Chairman of Cavan County Board presented the Oliver Plunkett Cup to Eamonn Reilly who once again captained Cavan Gaels while Paul Henry representing the Hotel Kilmore presented the Man of the Match award to Kevin Meehan who was closely followed in order of merit by Robert Maloney Derham. The Gaels will now play Donegal Champions Glenswilly in the Preliminary Round of the Ulster Senior Club Championship at Breffni Park on Sunday October 16th with the winners meeting Latton the Monaghan Champions in the 1st Round proper.
