John Fitzpatrick was born at 13 Bridge Street on the 5th of December 1964.Eldest son of Sean and Agnes Fitzpatrick Licensed Vintners.Educated at the Poor Clares Saint Felim's Boys School and Saint Patrick's College.Served his appreticeship to the Plumbing business with Pat Cosgrove Latt.Prominent member of Cavan CYMS ,he represented the Club in Senior competition from a very early age and won many of the Senior and Junior competitions during a distinguished snooker career.Outstanding 5 a side footballer, he was a member of several winning teams at these highly competitive tournaments at the Scout Den.Following his recovery from a near fatal accident where John as a pedestrian was knocked down,he emigrated to England in 1984. His untimely death occured on the 19th of November 2006.He is survived in Cavan by his parents Sean and Agnes brothers Padraic Eugene and sisters Marie and Doris.The CYMS formed a Guard of Honour at both his removal and funeral to Saint Brigid's Cemetery Killygarry.
Born on the 6th of December 1971 at 25 College Street,Jason was the fourth child of Tommy and Rhona Doyle.Educated at The Poor Clare's Saint Felim's Boys and the Royal School.On graduation Jason worked as a tiler and soon became a master of all trades including carpentry.Joined Cavan CYMS while still at school and was an outstanding snooker player winning many of the club trophies both as an individual and team member.Jason had a passion for music and was a talented drummer.In 1992 Jason emigrated to the USA and became and American citizen.He worked as a carpenter on many of the big New York projects including the prestigious Waldorf Astoria and Hilton Hotels.In October 1998 he married Jennifer Barzolla and his son Tristan Jason Doyle was born on the 20th October 1999.Jason was involved in a fatal automibile accident on the 2nd May 1999 which denied him the chance of being present for his son's birth.Survived by his mother Rhona brothers Mark Daryl and sisters Sharon and Francheska.Jason is buried in Cullies. Born at Number 5 Saint Mary's Terrace Cavan on the 2nd of February 1936.Eldest son of Michael and Elizabeth Jermyn.Michael was educated at the Poor Clares ,De La Salle School and Cavan Technical School.Married his childhood swetheart Kathleen Donohoe on the 21st of September 1959.Residing at 27 College Street,they had a family of of four boys Eugene,Sean,Bernard,Michael and one girl Ann.Painter by trade Michael was a master craftsman and could turn his hand to every intricate task of construction and decoration.Active member of Cavan CYMS Commitees for over forty years.Tenor with The Cathedral Choir.Member of both County Cavan and McGinnity's Golfing Society.For many years worked with Brendan Jenkins before starting his own successful business.Fully supported and promoted the move to our present custom built premises in 1997.His untimely death occured on the 2nd of March 2006 at the age of 70,to be followed by his wife Kathleen on May 3rd 2006.They are buried in the family plot in Cullies Cemetery.
Born in Phillips Street Dundalk in 1925.Tenor in Saint Patrick's Cathedral Choir.Clicker in Clarke's Shoe Factory.Married to Francesca Malloca.Two children Adriano and Sylvana.Proprietor of the very successful 'Central Cafe' in Bridge Street.Sean was a gifted singer and was a member of both the Cathedral Choir and The Boy Scout Pantomime Society.Took the lead role in many of the Monaghan Musical Society productions throughout the 1970s.Was a member of the popular 3 Macs Group.He was a very faithful and loyal member of Cavan CYMS and won many titanic competitions in the Hut.He embellished the Annual Mass for deceased members and friends with his fine tenor voice and Dessie Ronan as his backing accompaniment.He had a number of successful discs to his credit including 'The Ballad of Jack Kenneddy' and was a very popular DJ with CCR Radio before emigrating to America with his Family in 1993.Had a very successful career in cabaret at the Hilton Hotel Los Angeles until his sudden and untimely death in May 2005.
Prominent member in the 1970-1986 period.Represented the club at Junior and Senior level.Accomplished snooker player he won all of the Club's major tournaments.Emigrated to England in 1986, but always kept in touch with the Club and his friends in Cavan.He was son of Tony and Mary (Minnie) Donegan (Nee Cosgrove) 3 Jubilee Terrace.His sudden and untimely death occured in Manchester on the 28th of June 2004 and he is buried with his Parents in Cullies Cemetery.
Born in Cavan on the 23rd October 1936,Tommy McKiernan was one of the outstanding figures within the CYMS for over 50 years.Married his childhood sweetheart Ann Maguire in October 1959 and together they had 4 children (Paul,Teresa,Thomas and Catherine).Educated at the De La Salle and Vocational Schools,Tommy gave over 40 years loyal and dedicated service to Cavan Mineral Waters.Played both hurling and football with Cavan Harps.In later years, he was an accomplished member of CountyCavan Golf Club.Speaheaded the Club's fundraising efforts ,organising Golf Classics,Raffles and Appeals.Very wise and shrewd, Tommy weighed up all the options before the Committe collectively made any major decisions.As Chairman he was justifiably proud when the new building was blessed and dedicated on the 11th of September 1997.He continued as Chairman until his sudden and untimely death on the 3rd August 2000.The Family donated 'The Tommy McKiernan Perpetual Trophy' in honour of his lifetime service and dedication to the Club. One of the founder members and first Chairman of the old Catholic Club in 1890.He was a Clerical Officer and Caretaker of the Courthouse .Supervised all of the local elections and was Chief Returning Officer for both the Town Commissionars and later Urban Council elections.Founder member and player with Cavan Slashers.He was one of the four who reorganised the GAA in Cavan in 1903 and was Treasurer until his death.Joe was married to Mary Ann sister of the great Mick McGurk (College Street).Father of Barney,Pete,Hughie,Kathleen,Eileen,Winnie and Josie.All of the boys were later outstanding members of both the Catholic Club and the CYMS.He was later succeeded as Caretaker of the Courthouse by his wife and his daughter Eileen who held the post until 1987 when she retired to 1 Earlsvale Place thereby ending a Family association of 78 years with Cavan County Council. Born in Killyconnan Lavey in 1869. Married to Annie O Reilly from Rantanivan Mullagh.Father of Jimmy,Andy,Kevin,HP and Anna (Mrs Frank Conlon). Andy worked in the Anglo Celt for 67 years being Sports Editor for 6 decades.Oustanding footballer and captain with Cavan Slashers.He was better known as an Administrator and was Chairman of The Cavan County Board GAA for a number of years and a Trustee of Breffni Park which was purchased in 1923 and redeveloped in 1952.Chairman of the old Catholic Club from 1904-1907.Member and Chairman of Cavan UDC 1925.The McEntees had a very popular Bar,Newsagency and Grocery at 78 Main Street (Sean O' Reilly's MRCVSI).President of Cavan County Board GAA until his death on Wednesday July 22nd 1953. Born at Glasdrummond Poles in 1885 .Educated at Boy's School Cavan where he completed his Monitorship and Saint Patricks Training College Drumcondra. Phil was Principal of Coolboyogue School for 40 years,where he was highly respected by both parents,pupils and staff.Great Gael founder of Feis Breifne in 1918.Founder member of Cavan Branch Fianna Fail, He was Chairman and member of Cavan UDC for over thirty years.Played football with both Cavan Slashers and Behey Benburbs. Secretary of Cavan County Board GAA,he later was appointed Ulster Council Delegate.Founder member of Cavan CYMS in 1936, he served as both President and Secretary.MC at many of the big CYMS Whist Drives.Lived in Bridge Street (Larry Nee's 99p Shop) and reared a family of 8 (Maureen,Sue,Kathleen,Sheila,Bernadette,Frances,Tommy and Father Pat.).Maureen was married to Martin O Cadhain(Spiddal)- the renowed poet and Professor of Irish at UCD. Phil Ruddy died on the 29th of October 1967 and is buried in Saint Brigids Cemetery Killygarry.
Stan opened the first garage in Cavan in the early 1920s at Town Hall Street (NEHB premises) and specialised in the maintenance and repair of motor bikes and bicycles which was the main source of conveyance until the mid 1950s.Joined later in the business by Stan (junior) and Dickie both of whom were gifted mechanics.Stan (junior) was best pal of Tom McCusker and formed his own Band the 'Savanah' as well as suplying the accompaqniment on drums to all the local Shows and Pantomimes.Dickie was a talented badminton and table tennis player and was winner of all the local tournaments playing both for the CYMS and the Pavilion. Member of an old,prominent Cavan Family.Paddy was a very efficient Postman.A talented cyclist and athlete he won many titles and trophies at field days and feiseanna throughout Cavan and neighbouring counties. He was a frequent exhibitor and prize winner in the Horticulural sections of all the main Shows in the area and was particularly renowed for his displays of dahlias.Served the CYMS loyally and was the backbone of the very popular Sunday night Whist Drive.From the Harmonica to the Spoons Paddy could keep tune with the best although a Pioneer loved the'craic' at Fleadh Cheoils.Member of the Ulster title winning Cavan Harps Minors of 1924.He was conferred with the 'Cogadh na Saoirse'medal for his part in the fight for Independence and later the 'Emergency Service'medal for his immense contribution during the 1939-1945 War years.His sudeen death occured in the course of his postal deliveries on the Farnham Road In June 1972. A native of Annalitton Castleblayney.Prominent Cavan businessman and dentist.Along with his wife Mary(Whelan) started his first shop at 58 Main Street and quickly opened another Pharmacy'The Royal' (beside the Farnham Hotel).They had a Family of 4 boys Michael,Seamus,Tommy Toggy and Matty and one girl Mary .Tommy was an outstanding card player and inherited the much prized title of 'Killer' from the late Mick Fox.When producing a winning trump in a tense battle of 'Solo' Tommy would exclaim with delight "Come up Dungannon,I know your knock"!.His continued loyal support for the Club in its early years in the 'Hut' was a vital spark in ensuring the survival of the CYMS in Cavan.He died on 4th of December 1977 and is buried in Killygarry. Matt was born in Ashfield in the Parish of Kill in 1913..Second eldest of seven children (5 boys and two girls).His parents were small farmers and also ran the thriving local country shop.Served his time with a Maternal uncle Tommy Kelly in Bailieborough.Later worked in Oldcastle and Fore before coming to work in Leonards of Cavan.With the help of his friend and long time colleague Jim Mulvaney established a successful Men's Drapery in Upper Main Street.'McCutcheon's' soon became a household name for quality,service and value.Outstanding footballer, played for Kill Shamrocks,Bailieborough,Fore and Cavan Slashers.Later took up golf and played off a single handicap. Captain of County Cavan Golf Club in 1966.Founder member of Cavan CYMS ,he played on the Border League winning teams of the late 40s and early 50s.Enjoyed Solo,''25',Whist and Poker, his good humour and cool temperament were usually decisive.Retired in 1973 due to ill health, and died two years later.Matt is buried in Saint Brigid's Cemetery Kill. Born in 1912 in the townland of Coolbawn in the Parish of Balintemple,James was the youngest of ten children.Followed his Father Willie into the construction business.First worked with his brothers Barney and Willie with Cavan Urban Council before setting up his own successful business.Married Rose McGahern from Lacken in 1940 and they had a family of 6 children Sean,Brian,Margaret,Jimmy,Rosemary and the youngest Tony who owns 'House of Fabric'Main Street. Resided first in Abbey Street and then later beside the Bus Office .Jimmy and HL Smith organised the Club members for stewarding duties at the big functions in or around the Cathedral.Outstandingly brave and skilled member of Cavan Fire Brigade which was reformed after the Convent Fire of 1943.Enthusiastic,tireless and discreet charity worker with Cavan Saint Vincent De Paul. He was a founder member of Cavan CYMS and continued his active association until his untimely death on the 24th of October 1969 at the age of 57.Jimmy is buried in Potahee Cemetery. Long time member of the old Catholic Club.He embraced the CYMS code with great enthusiasm and loyalty.A Staff Officer with Cavan County Council,Joe made light of his amputee handicap and was a deightful billirds player.Along with Joe Higgins Jerry Lovett and Hughie Smith represented the Club with distinction in both the Clones and Enniskillen Billiard Tournaments before World War 2.A member of the famous Senior School,no game of 'Solo' was won until Joe had the last say.Married to Sally (Ronaghan) they resided along with their Family at Saint Phelim's Place. Plumber by trade . Joe was born at Latt and worked as a Farm Labourer,Servant and Draper.First Projectionist in the Town Hall during the 1920s,Joe had a lifelong love of movies and actors particularly Charlie Chaplin,Buster Keating and Mary Pickford.Outstanding footballer with both Behey Benburbs and Cavan Slashers winning a Senior Championship medal with the latter as goalkeeper in 1925.Met his wife Mary (Finnegan) from Mountnuggent through their mutual interest in the Gaelic League and lived at 25 College Street where they reared a large family in a small 3 bedroom house.Founder member of Cavan CYMS,Joe was adept at billiards,handball and cards but he is best remembered for his outstanding Company and wit.Member of the Old Cathedral choir,cultivated a taste for fine opera and classical music which many of his family later inherited.The Family moved to Cathedral Road where Joe died in November 1982 and is buried in the Family plot in Cullies. Member of both the Catholic Club and a founder of the Cavan CYMS in 1936.He served in every position on the Comittee.Brilliant card player he was affectionately known 'Killer' for his skill and deciveness, a title Tommy Connolly was to later inherit from him.Manager in O Gorman's Drapery Store (Oposite Cavan Credit Union) .He was the outstanding member of the Club during the first twenty years often re-elected to the Committe by Public Acclaim.The 1st Honary Life Member he was awarded the Gold Emblem by the National Executive in 1956 and continued active participation in the club up to his untimely death in 1959.
Born in February 1905 ,Joe spent all of his early life on the Railway Road (Finnegan's Supermarket).Served his time as a Tailor with McNamara's of ConnollyStreet later joining Tom McKenna's.Married Rose Finnegan and set up home at 28 Bridge Street.A member of the old Catholic Club Joe enthusiastically embraced the ideals of the CYMS and was a founder member.He was by far the most talented billiards player and led the CYMS to seven staright Inter League Championships (1940-1947).An ardent Gael he was a playing member of Stradone GFC and was an authority on Cavan and Ulster GAA affairs.The radio in the Club was tuned each Sunday for the GAA results of the day from Sean Og O Ceallachain and all activity ceased. while Joe and Hughie assimilated the news.Grandfather of Shane McGlade (Cavan Gaels).He stayed with the Club after the move to the Hut and all his family contributed to the survival and ultimate success of Cavan CYMS.His untimely death occured in June 1970. Born on the 23rd of September 1908 in Bear Island County Cork.Married Marjorie Murphy in Cobh Cathedral on August 9th 1932 ,they had a family of 5 children.Came to Cavan after a short stint in Ballyshannon and was the first Headmaster of Cavan Vocational School.He served as President of Cavan CYMS for a period of 20 years 1938-1957 and moulded the organisation to the original concept of Respect and Brotherhood.He was an accomplished billiards player, wonderful voice , MC at all the Club's functions.A founding member of Cavan Branch Fiann Fail,Emergency Committee (1939-1945),Gramaphone Society and Cavan Players.President of both Saint Joseph's Young Priests Society and Saint Vincent De Paul.He vigorously opposed the eviction of the Club from the Presbyery Premises and discontinued his association. He would be justifiably proud of the present premises ,healthy membership and sound financial position.No man did more than Gerry Lovett to foster promote and establish the CYMS in Cavan.He died on the 7th Feb 1970. Born in Scotland in 1913 son of Hugh and Elizabeth Cafferty.Benny was one of five children.Returned to Ireland as young boy and lived at Drumelis.Attended Farnham Schooll before graduating from Cavan Technical School.Married to Anna (Gibney) from Oldcastle- three children.They lived first in The Farnham Gardens and later Saint Pheilms Place Tall commanding figure worked on the construction of the new Cathedral before being appointed Area Salesman for McCarren's Bacon Factory where he travelled long miles and worked diligently away from home to establish McCarrens as a household name.Founder member of Cavan Branch Fine Gael ,he was a Peace Commisionar and long serving member of Cavan Urban Council.A keen supporter of both the County team and Cavan Gaels-his son Hugo was a member of the Cavan Minor team who reached the All Ireland in 1959..Accomplished snooker and billiards player,he could play a great hand of cards .His untimely death occured suddenl on the 10th of November 1974 and he is buried in Killygarry. Born in Skibereen in 1905.Joined the Civil Service as a Custom and Excise Officer in charge of weights and measures.Came to Cavan from Donegal in 1939 and introduced to the CYMS by his fellow Corkonian Gerry Lovett.Member of the Committe until he departed Cavan in the early 1960s.'The Doc' as he was affectionatley known was an accomplished card player and outstanding member of the Senior 'Solo' school using his immenses intellectual capacityand patience to outwit his friends and colleagues.He was one of the chief organisers and MC (once a month) of the Sunday night Whist Drive and always participated himself usually ending up in the Winner's Enclosure.His wife Mai was also an outstanding card player and supporter of the CYMS Sunday Night Whist Drives.They had a Family of three boys (Andrew,Jerome and Peter) and one girl (Mary)Very skilfull fly-fisherman. He was transferred to Dublin in 1960 and died in 1972.Jerome is buried in Deans Grange Cemetery Dublin..His son Father Peter is Parish Priest in Ballinagh. John M Breen born in Desert Cuffesgrey near Callan CountyKkilkenny in 1892.Took a prominent part in the fight for Independence.Obtained his BA(Hons) degree in Trinity College and appointed to the staff of Saint Patrick's College in 1922 where he taught Mathematics and Physics and Chemistry for a period of 28 years.Married to Jennie M'Gurn from Kiltyclogher.they had a family of seven Oliver,Fr.Sean,Kieran,Fr.Dan,Ita,Peggy and Dominick who died aged 7 and is buried in Cullies Cemetery.Captain of County Golf Club in 1928.Founder member and first Chairman of Cavan CYMS.During his long sojourn in Cavan the Family lived at 'Gowville' Cootehill Road.Took up an appointment with the Marian College in Dublin in 1956 and lived in Glenegeary until his death at the age of 81 on the 4th of August 1973.Father of Rev.Sean Breen who is Chaplain to the Racing fraternity in Ireland.John M Breen is buried in Glencullen Cemetery County Dublin.
Son of Mary and Dr.T J Madden MOH Kiltimagh County Mayo.Aidan was eductaed at Kiltimagh National School,Saint Nathy's Ballaghdereen and UCG where he qualified as an Engineer in 1940.Later joined the Irish Army and served in the Corps of Engineers attaining the rank of Captain stationed at Sarsfield Barracks Limerick.Apponted Chief Fire Officer for Cavan in April 1950 and overhauled and modernised the Fire Service.Deservedly popular,he consulted each member of the Brigade for their views before any major decision or new acquisition.Outstanding billiards player, member of all of the CYMS Border League wins of the early 1950s.Dedicated Secretary of Cavan CYMS for three years 1952-1955.His wife Nora took a leading part in the Pavilion Pantomimes and is still remembered for her stunning performances and beautiful soprano voice.They had one son (Louis) and lived at 'Spring Villa'('Lewis').Aidan transferred to Tipperary South in 1958 and died tragically in a train accident in England on May 10th 1974. Son of Joe and Mary Anne (Nee McGurk) Smyth The Courthouse.Hughie was a member of a Family of twelve.In his youth he was a brilliant hanballer and along with John Molloy of Bridge Street won an All Ireland title for Cavan in 1930.A talented badminton player,he was equally adept as a snooker and billiards player.Suceeded his od friend Jack Clark as Secretary of Cavan County Board GAA in 1937 and was active throughout the All Ireland winning years.Hughie after a game win or lose headed first for the Cathedral and then over to the Club to relate all the latest GAA news to his admiring and loyal friends.A founder member of the Lourdes Invalid Fund.he was a life long Pioneer.Chief Steward at all of the big Liturgical Cermonies in the Cathedral. He never lost faith in the Club's ability to survive even in the worst of times and was Treasurer of Cavan CYMS up to his death on the 2nd of Febraury 1984. Son of Walter and Rose Coffey Emmett Place.Felim was a Painter and Decorator by trade.Equally adept at both billiards and snooker.He was the winner of many prestige competitions and tournaments during the initial years in the Hut.Victim of early and prolonged ill health ,he was lovingly cared and attended to by the Nurses and Staff in Saint Phelim's Hospital until his untimely death in 1984.He is buried in the Family plot in Potahee. Born in Dundalk on the 10th of August 1916.His Father opened a Hairdressing Salon on the Main Street in Cavan (opposite Bridge Street Corner) with a Billiard Hall at the back.Tom joined his Father in the trade and became a legend at both Snooker and Billiards.Member of Cavan CYMS from the start.He represented the Club in all the major Billiard Competitions.reaching the All Ireland Final in 1952 where he was narrowly beaten by Pat Nolan from Newbridge.With the advent of colour TV, Tom really came into his own on the Snooker table and was matched with Bill Werbenick of Canada whom he he trounced in straight frames.A gifted musician Tom played with all the local 'outfits' including the '4 Aces', 'The Des Jenkins Orchestra' and 'Stan Mullery and the Savanah'.Married to Chris, they had a Family of four boys and two girls.In later years he retired to Ballyhaise but kept his strong links with the CYMS until his untimely death on the 25th of September 1989.Tom is buried in Killygarry. Born in Rocklands Crosserlough in 1920.Eugene was the youngest of a family of 6 (4 boys and 2 girls).Served his time as a Barman in Kate McCormack's Main Street and later married the proprietor's youngest daughter Mary.They had one child Tommy born on the 26th of October 1942.An institution in Cavan,orator,actor (Cavan Players),billiards player,publican,rate collector and latterly driving instructor.He was a master of mimicry,friend and confidant to alll.Founder member of Cavan Gaels GFC in 1957.For the rest of his life the Gaels were his passion.He lived to see them win their first Championship in 1965, repeating the feat ten years later.Master Fundraiser along with his friends and colleagues.Tommy Gilroy,Aidan Tmmons (1st Caller),Maurice Brady,Tommy Hughes,Paddy Conaty,Brigid Murray,Jack Smallhorne and Tommy Garvey established the Gaels Friday night Bingo in September 1964.Popular Secretary of Cavan CYMS from 1948 until 1954.Eugene's untimely death occured in November 1976 at the age of 56. A Shoemaker by trade Hughie resided at Abbey Street adjacent to the old Hut.He was a gifted card player with a wonderful even temperment.Enjoyed some wonderful jousts with AndyCafferty,Peter Sheridan,Mickey Breslin and Hughie Cosgrove etc with whom he formed a lasting friendship.Win or lose Hughie always had a smile and a kind word for all.With his good friend and Shoemaker Frank Farrell operated a very successful shoe store (Cavan Shoes) in Bridge Street where they not only sold shoes but carried out repairs to all types of footwear in a friendly convivial atmosphere. Native of Roscommon.Manager of the Drapery Department upstairs in Providers.Pioneered the development of under age football in the town with the De La Salle School.Along with Brother Cyril was very prominently identified with the many successful school teams of the 1950s.He was a founder member and on the first Committee of Cavan Gaels in 1957.Loyal member of the CYMS, he served as a prominent member of the Committe in the 1950s.Treasurer and enthusiastic member of Cavan Drama Festival for a long period in the 1950s and -60s.Enjoyed a game of billiards and solo.Expert on Gaelic football-he enjoyed the cut and thrust of an animated conversation when the merits of great teams and players were analysed and disected.Among the first guests in Jim Leonards ,he was a household name in the town.Matty Corcoran's sudden and untimely death occured at the age of 50 while he was on a visit home to Roscommon in 1975. Born in New York on the 8th of December 1907.His Family returned to County Monaghan a short time later.and commenced farming at Lisevam.After a short time moved to a larger holding at Newgrove.He served his time to the Footwear business with The Monaghan Boot Company on the Diamond .Having completed his appreniceship went to work in Morris' of Arva.On Saint Patrick's Day 1936, Peter Mullen opened his own store on the Main Street in Cavan.The business became an institution and Mullens a household name for quality and service.Peter retired in 1972 and sold his interests in the business to his old friend,confidant and employee Jackie Smith from Ashe Street.Founder member of Cavan CYMS,Peter was best known for his efficient and courteous stewarding and outstanding 'Solo' play equally adept at Whist and 25.Talented member of the famous Cavan Players,Peter loved to sing with a bit of humour 'You Be Damned Said I' being his party piece.He died on the 6th April 1993 and is buried in Lathlurcan Cemetery Monaghan. Born in Belfast in 1906 only son of Thomas (Catholic) and Jenny(Presbyterian) Browne.His Father owned a pub at 7-9 Dock Street.Their home was burnt down several times during the heightened secterian violence of that turbulent time.Attended Saint Malachy's College and later Queens University where he obtained his MA in 1927/28.Short sojourn in Limerick before coming to Saint Patrick's College as Professor of Mathematics and English in 1929.Married Maureen (Laverty) and they had a Family of 2 boys Brendan and Patrick.Founder member of Cavan CYMS in 1936-he served on all the early Committees either as Treasurer or Secretary.Prominent member of the Red Cross ,Knights of Columbanus and Cavan Gramaphone Society.Transferred to Blacrock College in 1958 and served as head of the Mathematical faculty where a young Bob Geldoff was one of his pupils.Retired from teaching in 1973.William died in 1990 at the age of 84 and is buried along with his first wife Maureen and Peggy whom he married in 1988 in Cullies Cemetery. Born in Banahoo Carrickaboy on the 8th of July 1905,.Joe worked in Sullivan's before opening his own Hardware,Bar and Funeral Undertaking business at Upper Main Street.Married to May Rodgers from Ballinrobe County Mayol.Family of five girls (Mary,Aine,Katherine,Brigid, Josephine) and one boy Gerard who was later a very prominent member of Cavan CYMS before his ordination and subsequent appointment to Sarasota Florida in 1967..Joe's contribution to the Golden Jubilee publication gives a perfect insight to the pace,humour and tenor of life in the late thirties.Skilled card and billiards player he enjoyed the companionship of his friends in the CYMS and retained mutual esteem and respect throughout his long life.Very loyal Gael , never missed a game in Breffni Park.Had a modest daily flutter on the horses.Retired from business in 1990 after 50 years of outstanding service to the Community.Joe died on the 22nd of October 1994 and is buried with his wife May in Killygarry Cemetery. Jim was born at 69 College Street on the 22nd June 1925.Received his early education at the Boy's School (Reilly's Mineral Waters) and later at Cavan Technical School.His first job was with McCormick's Egg Merchants where he met and married his wife Mary (Sheridan).They hada Family of two sons (Jimmy and Tommy ) together with three daughters (Sheila,Mary and Eileen).Jim later worked as a Salesman with McCarren's Joined the CYMS in 1941.He was to give an unbroken commitment of 47 years to the Organisation during which he served in every position on the Committee.Represented the Club in all the major tournaments both at billiards,snooker and table tennis.Jim's greatest asset was his pleasing personality and genuine enthusiasm both for the Membership and the Club.He played a major part in the CYMS' survival and development.His sudden and untimely death occured on the 31st of December 1988 and he is buried in Killygarry. A household name in Cavan and much further a field.Pat was a very popular and prominent business man.A native of Glangevlin,he worked in Sean Magee's Bridge Street before setting up his own business in Connolly Street.Married to Angela they had six children.His son,Terry still successfully maintains the Family business tradition in Connolly Street.Pat was very proud and loyal to the CYMS and attended all of the functions and celebrations long after his own active involvement with the Club.Pat is buried along with his wife Angela in Saint Brigids Church Killygarry. Son of Jim and Alice Mooney ,Jim was born in 1947..Committee member from the late 1960s Jim was a delight to work with -always cheerful and willing.Married to Maryh.they had a Family of four sons (Francis, James,Michael and Noel)l.An employee of Cavan County Council.Youngest member of the Cavan Gael's first Championship winning team in 1965.Long serving member of Cavan Fire Brigade,Cavan Gaels GFC and Team P Elliott Athletic Club.His untimely death occured on 4th of April 1998. Born on the 11th of August 1951 ,the son of Tommy and Josie Sheridan (nee Donohoe) Sub Post Office Upper Main Street.Oustanding member of Cavan CYMS and an ever present on the Committee from 1972 until his untimely death.Talented billiards and snooker player he won both at Senior and Junior-winning his first Junior Title in1966.Enjoyed a game of cards in the company of his true and loyal friends in the Club.Involved in the purchase and fundraising in the mid 1970s.He lived to see the fruits of his labour and was justifiably proud of his immense contribution.Married to Maureen ( Dalton) .Peter's untimely death occured on the 2nd of August 1999.
Born on the 13th of May 1914 A life long member of Cavan CYMS.He served in all of the Executive positions on the Committee.A talented Snooker and Billiards player, he won many of the Club competitions both in the Presbytery premises and in the Hut.Came to Cavan to serve his time as Apprentice Mechanic with GNR becoming a Bus Driver after his apprenticeship.Drove the bus carrying the victorious Cavan team with the Sam Maguire back to the Farnham Gardens on the 5th of October 1947.His many acts of kindness and obligement in the safe conveyance of his Passengers are legendary.He was married to Betty(Wallace), and they had a Family of three boys and one girl (Michael Jnr,Norman and Brendan).His daughter Laura is married to Martin Loughman College Street.Michal was Honary President of the Club at his death on the 22nd of January 2000 and he is buried in Killygarry. Born in Abbey Street on the 4th of August 1943,Brian was associated with Cavan CYMS from a very early age as his Father Jimmy was a founder member of the Club.Prominent member of Cavan Boy Scouts Band who frequently broadcast from Radio eireann during the late 1950s.Served his time with Toggy Connolly in the shoe trade before joining the Mighty Avons Showband as the drummer in 1960.After their first record 'Tribute to Jim Reeves',Larry Cunningham and the Mighty Avons becamea household name both at home and abroad. Their popularity was enhanced with their chart topping 'Lovely Leitrim'.Further success and acclaim followed with Gene Stuart as lead singer.Brian later opened a Record Shop in Cavan and along with Brian O' Reilly owned the very popular CCR Radio Station.Manager of John Hogan and Kathy Durkin among others.He was married to Phyllis (Mortimer) with a Family of two children Clive and Kerrie and resided at 'White Plains' Keadue Lane before his sudden and untimely death on the 15th of December 2002.
Native of the town,Ned was born on the 1st of April 1922.Married to Moya (O Rourke) they had 8 of a Family(5 girls and 3 boys).Served the CYMS loyally for 50 years and with steely conviction ensured the survival of the organisation during the early turbulent period in the Hut.Enjoyed a game of snooker or billiards but the Cards and the 'Solo' were his first love.Worked long tough hours in McCarens Bacon Factory and enjoyed the little leisure time he had in the company of his lifetime friends and companions in the CYMS.Wise and witty, he was highly respected by the younger members who always confided and sought his guidance and advice.He was a proud President of the Club when the CYMS moved into its present splendidly appointed premises on the 11th of September 1997.His untimely death occured on the 3rd of November 1998 and he is buried in Saint Brigid's Cemetery Killygarry. Last Secetary of Cavan CYMS in the Presbytery premises. Native of Castleblayney County Monaghan.Eddie was Manager of the Grocery Department in Providers.In the days when people dealt on credit and in the book,Eddie spent most of the week compiling orders for weekend delivery usually by his good friend Jimmy Costello (Cullies).Extremely popular with both staff and customers,he worked long hours serving the large and expanding Provider's customer base.After Providers sold their interests to Quinnsworth,Eddie was appointed Sales Manager with McCarrens( replacing the recently deceased Benny Cafferty).His loyalties were to Monaghan and he was a great supporter of both the Monaghan Senior team and Castleblaney Faughs. Outstanding billiards player and member of the CYMS Border League teams of the late 1950s.After McCarrens Eddie took up a similiar appointment in Monaghan with Noel Mallon.Lost both his legs due to illness, but made little of his handicap and continued to live out his life until his death in 1995. Native of Laragh,Phil Lee was a Barber by trade and served his time with Jack Reilly before starting his first shop in Castlepollard in 1935.Opened his premises in Ashe Street in 1940 where he carried on a very successful business for over forty years.Married to Ellen,they had two sons Patsy and David.Founder member of the De La Salle Flagelot Band in 1955 with his neighbour Paddy Duffy as Bandmaster.Last Chairman of Cavan Harps,Phil transferred his allegiances to Drumalee in 1957 and was Vice Chairman,President and County Board Delegate for over thirty years.Enjoyed his weekly half day trip fishing at Bakersbridge.Backbone of the weekly CYMS Whist Drives.Phil enjoyed a game of Solo and played poker for modest stakes.Self educated, he was extremely well informed and could discuss all of the local and international news with his friends and customers.After his retirement,Phil took up residence at Keadue and included daily Mass in his busy schedule.He died at the age of 90 on the 17th of October 1999. Son of Helen and Michael Tully 15 Saint Brigids Terrace Cavan.Connie was born on August 15th 1927.He was a member of the Cavan CYMS from an early age and served on the successful Committees of the mid 1950s who were wonderful fundraisers by means of Bazaars and the weekly Whist Drives .Worked for a period with Benny Conaty Publican ConnollyStreet before emigrating to England where he served as a Printer with the world famous Dickenson Press in Hemel Hempstead.After a fruitful 21 years of service retired back to Cavan and lived at 13 Breffni Terrace until his untimely death on the 25th of July 2000.He was a brother of Paddy Tully late of the Magnet Cinema. Prominent member of Cavan CYMS in the 1950s.Lary worked in Providers and was Manager of the Hardware Department.Native of Bailieboro,he stayed in 'digs' with May Reilly in College Street.Prominent playing member of Cavan Slashers.He later played with Cavan Gaels and was a valuable member of all the early Gael's Committees.Treasurer and Registrar with Cavan CYMS.He transfered to Dundalk in 1965 and operated a very successful furniture and hardware business.Came back to Cavan for all the big Senior county and Cavan Gaels Championship games when he notably paid a courtesy call on his old Landlady in College Street.Larry died in Dundalk in 1998.
John Fitzpatrick was born at 13 Bridge Street on the 5th of December 1964.Eldest son of Sean and Agnes Fitzpatrick Licensed Vintners.Educated at the Poor Clares Saint Felim's Boys School and Saint Patrick's College.Served his appreticeship to the Plumbing business with Pat Cosgrove Latt.Prominent member of Cavan CYMS ,he represented the Club in Senior competition from a very early age and won many of the Senior and Junior competitions during a distinguished snooker career.Outstanding 5 a side footballer, he was a member of several winning teams at these highly competitive tournaments at the Scout Den.Following his recovery from a near fatal accident where John as a pedestrian was knocked down,he emigrated to England in 1984. His untimely death occured on the 19th of November 2006.He is survived in Cavan by his parents Sean and Agnes brothers Padraic Eugene and sisters Marie and Doris.The CYMS formed a Guard of Honour at both his removal and funeral to Saint Brigid's Cemetery Killygarry.
